Such Sweet Sorrow: Cadillac's CTS-V gets an Irish wake
We Join GM At COTA To Give Its Performance Hero A Worthy Sendoff
By Steve Siler
Nov 26th 2014

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. The honkin', stonkin' second-generation CTS-V, powered by Cadillac's brawny supercharged 6.2-liter V8 has been a very good thing. And now that the 500 final coupes – the only CTS-Vs designated 2015 models – have been built (just five remain unsold as of this writing), it is indeed a good thing that's come to an end.

But Cadillac is not letting 2009–2015 CTS-V go gently into that good night, even as its replacement is poised to debut in just in just two months at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. Instead, Cadillac invited us to Austin's Circuit of the Americas racetrack for what it called an "Irish wake" for the model that has proven to be one of the quickest and most charismatic models in General Motors' history.

If you don't know what an Irish wake is, if you envision storytelling, songs, debauchery and more than a little liquor, you'll be in the ballpark. In this case, though, adrenaline substituted in for the booze, with squealing tires and shrieking V8s providing the singing. The debauchery took the form of an all-you-can-drive lapping of COTA in all three bodystyles – coupe, sedan and wagon – and the stories were told by the grins plastered on our faces all day.

Going to miss the old girl. Especially now that we've learned that it's unlikely the next CTS-V will get a manual transmission; or wagon or coupe variants for that matter.

Thankfully the spirit of the old CTS-V will "carryon" in the ATS-V, but it is still sad to see the sun-setting on such a wonderful performance bargain. In the years ahead, I wonder if we'll talk of this generation CTS-V in the same glowing, longing way as performance hounds speak of the E39-based BMW M5?

Can feel some Guinness, ole Irish legendary Ford Escort rally story telling songs coming on, probably Irish wake done back in Ireland.

So with only 5-6 weeks to go before the New CTS-V reveal I'd lay good money on some decent spy shots/specifications getting ready to drop any day now. How long before the ATS-V reveal was it that we saw the car completely naked during a photo shoot? 3-4 weeks?

Oh and all three Gen 2 V's are amazing. I love the coupe in dark grey metallic with saffron seat inserts, and the Wagon is simply lust worthy imo. It's a pity the wagon is likely one and done as it is a teenage boy's dream car poster on the bedroom wall material. It's one Honkin' stonkin' bad ass car!;)

Quick search on Cars.com has 5924 2010-2015 CTS for sale. Of those, 1206 coupes and 158 wagons, including 220 V coupes and only 13 V wagons ($40k-$65k)...that's only 0.2%!

I love my 6MT V wagon.

I'm sorry and glad at the same time to see it end.

Sorry in that it was, and is, a special car. I thoroughly enjoy driving mine daily. Glad in that with appropriate care, depreciation will maybe bottom out faster. :) It is a "keeper".

Thank you, Bob Lutz, for allowing this crazy idea to happen. A manual station wagon with a blown engine may never happen again in this country.
