Did they cook some Ball Park franks in the trunk?
"The plump when you cook them."
Or are they trying to reminisce about the bustle trunk on the late '70s Seville?

No, I know. Japanese origami.
They folded the sheet metal to get the creases in the trunk lid.

If an inch or two makes or breaks fit in your garage, maybe you should consider a bicycle?
No, I want a car that actually fits in my garage without being crammed in there like a sardine.
This is the only one that manages to do it without also being short.

Which is odd considering how super close they are in size.

2017 Impala

Overall length 201.3"
Wheelbase 111.7
Max width 73.0

2017 XTS

Overall length 202.0"
wheelbase 111.7
Max width 72.9"

The current LaCrosse uses the new longer wheelbase Epsilon platform

Overall length 197.5"
wheelbase 114.4
max width 73.5

Power folding mirrors are standard on the XTS and unavailable on the other two. I was surprised at how much of a difference it makes.
It can be parked closer to the wall on the driver's side which creates much more space between the cars. And there's no mirror sticking out.
The other car is always a coupe which has longer doors, so I need all the room I can get.

I always park one car reverse and the other normal. It allows for there to be a wider center path so makes it easier to get in and out when both driver side doors are facing the middle.

I really the hate the bumperettes. They just muddy up the design even more than it already is. The Chinese version without them looks a bit cleaner.

The current rear end is way, way cleaner:

I agree. Unfortunately we still see remnants of Ed Welburn's malaise over surfacing in new designs

It would work in theory, except the shorter car has to be on the right side of the garage because that's where the door is that goes into the house.
The shorter car is mine. For the driver's doors to open to the center, the wife would have to back in.
That is an utterly impossible scenario.

Power folding mirrors solve everything, so we will have them.
Plus, the ride quality of the XTS is much better than the other two when equipped with 20" wheels.

As to the taillight haters, my eyes still see vertical...with a flourish. Current version may look "cleaner" in the rear, but my term for it is boring. Nothing wrong with the beveled deck lid. Makes it look more substantial.
I'm sure they clinic'd this look with Caddy owners before it was signed off. Would like to see a 3/4 rear shot.

And to that end I'd be one in the audience doing the catcalling. BOO!!! Definition of catcall According to Merriam-Webster
1
: a loud or raucous cry made especially to express disapproval (as at a sports event)
2
: a derisive remark : criticism

I would go even further and say it seems the entire industry is in a malaise. So many new cars these days are just ugly. So many designs seem to have lines going all over the place.

Civics, for example, used to be boring at worst. Now, they're hideous.

Ferraris used to be beautiful. While they still look "aggressive," the elegance is gone. I might argue the same about Corvettes. I could go on and on.

There are a lot of what Bob Lutz might refer to as angry kitchen appliances out there these days. New cars used to excite me a lot more. Modern car design makes it much more difficult to get excited. All the SUVs don't help either.

I agree and second the motion.

Yep. Beauty is deliberately becoming non-existent. It's just as bad or worse in architecture. I often hope that we will witness a New Renaissance someday.

There is just no way to fix the architectural oddity that is the XTS, it's extremely outdated and belongs in a different decade. But business is business and you have to work with what you got and the facelift is interesting. I'm not a fan of the older Caddy fascia but the rear is something of an improvement, but I need to see that in person to fully appreciate or judge. The Escala concept is still the only caddy fascia I've ever liked so I was hoping for that.

Yes and no.

All I know is, I've never been less excited about the industry.

To jump on the bandwagon, I agree. Way too many lines/creases going in different directions. This is why I like the current Volvo designs. They are clean and elegant. But I suppose to each their own.
