General Motors Co. is ending production of the gas-powered Cadillac XT4 small SUV in January 2025, the automaker confirmed Thursday.

The XT4 is built at GM's Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas, where production of the Chevrolet Malibu sedan ended this month. GM is still investing $391 million in Fairfax to make a new version of the Chevrolet Bolt starting in late 2025.

GM originally planned to end XT4 production in January and then resume it in mid-2025 but pulled back on those plans. Cadillac has three more EVs coming: the Escalade IQ, the Optiq SUV and the Vistiq three-row SUV.

Seems incredibly short-sighted and nonsensical.

I understand the need to retool Fairfax for EV production.

However, unless they are going to eventually shift the XT4 to another plant (or possibly import the model from outside the United States/Canada) this seems like a great opportunity to cede more volume and customers to other automakers.

And while we know more Cadillac EVs are on the horizon (including the Optiq, which would seeming take on the XT4's role within the lineup), sacrificing an ICE-powered model while the EV take-up rate is has been somewhat unsteady would seem like a riskier strategy.

In fact, only earlier this year, Cadillac backpedaled on their plan to end all ICE-powered products by the end of the decade. Rather, they now state that ICE and EVs would coexist in their lineup for years to come.

Caddy has an abundance of 2-Row crossovers, with a direct EV replacement, I'm sure they can handle its absence fine. But they might have been able to keep XT4 if was built at a different plant. It's too bad, XT4 is a uniquely attractive little ute. It's surprising how many product decisions ultimately come down to plant utilization.

Waiting to see what happens to XT5, bailing on that would be a huge commitment to EV only at Caddy. Both XT5 and XT6 are incredibly outdated at this point so they are probably just going to run down the clock, but there is still a chance they'll change course and spruce them up and cook up a replacement based on the new Chevy/GMC Utes.

I have to hand it to GM, if this works they'll have pulled off something most automakers haven't been able to. But it fails, it'll be a big one!

it's real issues were powertrain and refinement.
+1
Yup. In terms of refinement, XT4's LSY 2.0L engine and 9-speed automatic transmission combo is barely appropriate for a $30k Chevy, let alone a $42k Cadillac.

Yes lets get rid of the relatively new and updated xt4. And keep the old as dirt xt5 and 6. What a great decision. It's not like the 5 and 6 should have been updated two years ago or anything. They're so old now I'm pretty sure they can't even have some of the latest tech and features installed in them because the electrical system is just not compatible.

Yet another stupid, shortsighted decision. Par for the course these days, seemingly.

It took them forever to create a small CUV to compete in that segment and… they’re killing it?? Good God Cadillac is so ****ing stupid. Like no part of this makes sense at all. Not everyone wants an EV or Hybrid!

GM needs to learn about Hybrids, kind of a big deal these days ;)
Agreed however I think they are still moving Cadillac to all EV and, I don't think I will follow at this point.

So Fairfax is only going to built the Bolt? Does GM really anticipate that much demand?
I can't see it UNLESS costs allow pricing that is super juicy.

That's surprising being that they just updated it. If this is for real, I have doubts that this is the right move to make with Cadillac's entry level vehicle. As gung-ho as I am on BEV's, the market has strongly demonstrated that it isn't time to pull the plug on ICE.
The recent update definitely make this surprising for sure but GM has done it before.

The XT4 has always been a mystery to me. On the surface, it seems like such a nicely designed and desirable small luxury SUV, particularly with the new interior. However, from the beginning with the first reviews, it got terrible ratings with respect to the 2.0L turbo engine being buzzy, noisy and unrefined. Even from people who had a rental or loaner. Yet the same engine in the CT4, CT5, and nearly identical Envision do not get the same poor reviews.

I thought surely that GM would solve this issue over the years. Sound deadening material? Noise cancellation?

Probably their thinking as well. Why make two so similar in price? I am sure they will just try to upsell to the XT5.

How many times has GM done this: finally improve a model to the point it is desirable, and then cancel it (at least in the U.S.). Remember the CT6 with the original Blackwing engine? The Chevrolet SS with the LS3 and manual? We could go all the way back to the Fiero with the V-6.

And, somehow, GM thinks what is needed in the marketplace right now is a brand with no compact ICE crossover, because, you know, GLA, X3, Q3, GV60, NX, Corsair, RDX.

What's next: they make the Escalade a "sub-brand," offer it in pick-up and convertible versions, and cancel everything else?
