Executives at the launch of the Cadillac STS talked a lot about "renaissance." The company is changing, certainly, although at times it seems more like a crusade than a renaissance. In reinventing itself, Cadillac is walking a razor’s edge, bringing out products to attract new customers (younger, hipper) while trying to build in enough "Cadillacness" that loyalists (older, unhipper) still want the new models. A tough task, to be sure.

Through extensive marketing and the classic rock tunes of Led Zeppelin used in its advertising, Cadillac is trying to change people’s perceptions. But the guy in charge of building the cars knows slick presentations and rock ’n’ roll is not enough.

"We’re changing people’s attitudes by putting great products on the road," said Jim Taylor, GM vehicle line executive for prestige vehicles. The new models, like the CTS-V, XLR and SRX, are damn good. Now you can add the STS to that list.

The STS brings to eight the number of Cadillacs released since 2001 (Escalade, CTS, Escalade EXT, Escalade ESV, SRX, XLR and CTS-V), all dressed in the now-familiar Cadillac style. STS sports several evolutionary refinements of that style, softening the harsh edges a bit, and making the car (AW, April 12) that goes on sale this fall the best-looking of them all. And the STS drives even better than it looks.

STS replaces the Seville—a Cadillac standby since 1976—and in a major switch, the new car moves from a fwd platform to a rwd or awd. It is the third domestic car built on GM’s global Sigma platform, along with the CTS and SRX. We sampled all three versions of the STS—rwd V8 and V6 models, and an awd V8—in pre-production forms. Production cars will begin rolling off the Lansing, Michigan, assembly line later this summer.

When STS was unveiled just before the New York show, Cadillac general manager Mark LaNeve said the car would play against the BMW 5 Series and 7 Series (falling between those two models), not to mention competing squarely against the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6 and the Lexus GS 300 and LS 430. That’s a pretty tough crowd, but STS belongs in the same discussion. It is that good.

"The prestige luxury segment is where the big guys play, and that’s where we want to be. The key is finding the sweet spot between luxury and performance. And we have to include the latest technology that is reasonably customer-friendly," Taylor said.

:p FYI: Chance to own a new STS

Allstate is giving away 5 new cadillacs as part of an olympics campaign. Actually, they are paying upto $50,000 towards a new Caddy. Still a great opportunity for a chance to walk away with a CTS-V or STS for a fraction of the cost.

:( But if you win instead of me, I expect atleast a thank you card

see www.AllStateGoUSA.com (don't know if GM employees are excluded, you'll have to read the fine print)

PS-yesterday I saw the worse thing ever on the highway- a white CTS with burgundy landau top and gold badging.

The investment that GM has made in Cadillac proves that people will buy the product if it is good.

I'm driving a new AWD SRX and I love it. The Northstar engine is great, the car handles well, the interior is nice, and everything works as I would expect it to. The latest STS adds another degree of separation between Cadillac and Lincoln, which hasn't introduced a new Lincoln car (not truck) since the LS. Cadillac is the only American brand worthy of consideration among Mercedes, BMW, Lexus.

Cadillac now needs to get a V-12 in the market. Leave the "near-luxury" to Buick, which needs its own cash infusion.

Yeah, a 16 would be fun, but Cadillac needs to earn each step it takes. GM doesn't have a competitor to the BMW and Mercedes V-12s (does Jaguar still make a 12?).

If GM can do a 16, my guess is that it wouldn't fit into anything except a vehicle specially-designed for it. At least a 12 might squeeze into an STS (or maybe an Escalade for the bling-bling crowd).

Regardless, I think we agree that there needs to be an option above the Northstar V-8 for the XLR.

Yes, I've seen a similar vehicle on a dealer lot. Those are dealer modifications. While GM is getting the right product to Cadillac dealers, some dealers are stuck in the 1970s. I've seen a CTS with a full padded vinyl roof. Argh!!!

Hopefully those modifications will be few and far between ... don't want to taint the new image.

Agreed, Cadillac has put up competitive V6 and V8 models and has taken over the luxury truck market with Escalades. In a few years, they'll talk about competing with the V12 models from BMW and Mercedes. After that (shortly after I hope) they'll once again become the standard of the world with a V16 super-luxury car.

Yeah, Caddy needs an ultra sedan with a V-12 under the hood. If they're serious about taking on the Germans, they'll create such a sedan. I suspect one is already in the works but i think GM is still unsure whether Cadillac needs such a car. It does! They can't rest on their laurels now. It seems that GM chassis wizards are on to something. Let's see if we can create an ultra-lux sedan. I think the car should be called the Fleetwood sedan. I'm not to fond of the alpha-numeric acronyms, especially on large cars.

 Cadillac has a-lot at steak with the all new sts,and i hope that the gamble pays off.they have "out-distance" Lincoln by a large margine, and now they should concentrate their efforts on building a Large V12 sedan that should be wedged between the Maybach, and the S-class benz.Cadillac has the technology to build the 12-cylinder,and they should if they are trying to reach "all" classes of people.I'm hearing some reports on the upcomming Escalade.some said it's going to have a 12-cylinder,and some are saying that it's gonna have a blown 6.2LV8engine.Shaq,and Snoop have already seen the new Escalade, and i hope it's nicer than the current one now.

By customer-friendly, Taylor means Cadillac customers want to be able to tune the car’s radio without an hour-long ground school from their dealer. Taylor didn’t mention BMW’s infamous iDrive by name, but the point was taken.
...you gotta love it! :woot2:

In fairness, the writer later says that "we wished we had iDrive, since we’ve invested enough time figuring that system out". I guess the little knob is addictive.

Well done Caddy, a full 180 in the mind of the public and (amazingly) the car magazine journalists!!!

Whatever Cadillac is smoking they should be a pal and pass it along to the other GM design teams... let Saturn and Pontiac hit it a few extra times... ;)
