The long-in-the-tooth Cadillac XTS has just been given a new lease on life thanks to a round of new updates.

Cadillac's changes to the XTS are the first major changes to the car since it debuted back in 2012, bringing a refreshed exterior, new technology, and chassis refinements.

Starting with styling, the refreshed XTS gets a new set of fascias to bring it in line with Cadillac's evolving design language, plus a new grille, reworked fenders and restyled LED lamps front and back. The new bodywork actually shortens the car by 1.1 inches compared to the outgoing model. Cadillac also promises new wheel designs in both 19" and 20" sizes, plus up to 10 exterior paint choices.

Moving inside the cabin, drivers will be offered an expanded portfolio of color and trim options, along with new seats and an updated version of Cadillac's user experience (CUE) displayed on an 8-inch LCD touchscreen; like the rest of GM's new models, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot come standard. Platinum trim models will get a leather-wrapped interior along with a suede headliner and wood trimmings across key touch points.

In terms of trunk space, the XTS offers 18 cubic feet dwarfing most of its midsize and full-size rivals, Cadillac claims there's enough room for five suitcases.

"Cadillac pioneered connectivity by bringing OnStar to market, and more recently we became the first luxury brand to enable Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across our product line," says Richard Brekus, Cadillac director of Product Strategy. "We have worked to improve overall system response in recent years, and now this next-generation user experience system delivers more improvements, focused mainly on intuitive control."

There's also a suite of safety helpers available through the Driver Awareness Package, which features Low Speed Automatic Braking, Following Distance Indicators, Lane Change Alert, and Side Blind Zone Alert. The Driver Awareness Package is available on Luxury Trim and becomes standard on higher trims. In addition, there's a Driver Assist Package, which adds Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward/Reverse Automatic Braking, becomes available on Premium Luxury cars, and is standard kit on Platinum models.

On the mechanical side, the XTS gets an updated chassis, which features strategically placed ultra-high strength steel which ups rigidity and crash worthiness. Optional features include available Magnetic Ride Control, Rear Air Levelling along with a Haldex based all-wheel drive system which features an electronic limited-slip differential.

Powertrain changes are non-existent, the base XTS will once again feature a 3.6-liter V-6, while the Vsport model keeps its twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6. All cars will come linked to a 6-speed automatic, with front- or all-wheel drive choices prevalent throughout the trim levels.

Updated pricing information will be announced closer to car's arrival in stores later this year.
