Great news! The Europeans love their motorsport, this Aussie used to love watching the British Touring Cars when I was a teenager. Finers crossed you get a few wins, put the European cars in the spot and Cadillac gets a sales boost from the exposure.

I know that DTM is in Germany - but is it German specific? By that I mean, do they only run their events in Germany?

How does DTM compare to the WTCC and the like?

Just curious.
I think (though I am not your best source) that DTM, It seems only Germany does it, sort of like Nascar for Germany, but they tour Europe. Here is more
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsche_Tourenwagen_Masters

I do not know if its strictly restricted to German makers or there is just no interest by say Peugeot or Saab to race in it. Alfa Romeo used to be part of it.

Toyota got into NASCAR, I'm sure Cadillac could get into DTM. :D

DTM is not raced only in Germany !! The races are on live TV in nearly every country in the world. Except here....
This year the 12 race schedule....won by AUDI, included Mugello, Italy; Zandvoort, Netherlands; Brands Hatch, England; Barcelona, Spain; and LeMans, France [not the 24HR.] I also believe a final event in Behrain was cancelled this year due to economic conditions. It is generally considered the most popular touring car series in the world.
Current rules call for normally aspirated 4.0 V8's with about 500 HP. They are far from the most powerful touring cars but they might be the most expensive. They easily cost 10 times more than a NASCAR stocker... probably 20 times more. They are technically nearly as complicated as formula one cars...hence the reluctance of firms other than Audi and MBZ to compete, BMW has withdrawn because of cost for example. The rules would not stop American cars or others from competing. In the past Volvo even won the series, as did BMW 6 series when it was known as the German Touring Car Championship. Now it is known as German Touring Masters....DTM.
BTW, several Mustangs privately entered by German Tuners ran various races in the early '90's and the best finish ever was 8th I believe. I attended a race a number of years ago and suggested a well prepared Camaro would be very competitive in 2 years. One to learn the rules and tracks, and one to prepare the car and team. The Germans present told me "no way", and if it did happen the rules would be changed. Plus at that time I did not know how sophisticated the cars would become....I've been told roughly one million per car [rolling chassis], one million per engine and transmission, and one million per electronics/enginemanagement system. A C6R would blow them away on any track but it is not a touring car. You would have to play by their rules .... ie.,home field advantage. But my professional opinion is GM has the ability to be competitive with Cadillac or Chevy.....but not the interest or money.
If you doubt my synopsis check out www.dtm.de and appropriate a lot of Marks. This is my favorite racing series in the world. And ultra. ultra competitive.

Thanks Stovebolt, you reminded me Opel Astra raced in DTM until 2 years ago ..........before that different Opel models were often involved. They never won any races.....but they were competitive. AWD is allowed in DTM too....another reason why BMW left about 5 years ago.
BTW Alfa was in DTM throughout the '90's and they are definitely not German !! They had 2 two-car teams and did win races overall.

i thought i heard that DTM is a joke now. they only allow MB, Audi, and BMW, and there is very little who participate. and fans are really getting turned off of it.

Wrong !!! please read my post above. Because of the cost only Audi and MBZ have been entered the last 2 years. Opel privateers may have entered a few times 2 years ago. No BMW's have entered for years. They have no competitive cars. Check the list of drivers in this series, the attendance at the races, the venues, and the sophistication of the cars. All world class. What is hurting this series is the overwhelming cost to be competitive.
Sort of like F1....... I expect they will have to do something to make the series less expensive to run. Sort of like ALMS,,,,,not enough variety of entrants to suite a world famous series.

Opel won the DTM with the Calibra in 1996. Also the Astra V8 DTM race car won the 24h race at the Nürburgring in 2003 against cars like BMW M3 GTR, Audi TT-R, Porsche, Corvette, Viper and so on.

Great post Toto...... the Opel Calibras were awesome. They were AWD and smoked everyone, lead by KEKe Rosburg, I believe. I have 1/18 models of 10 of them from that era. As well as 6 Astra models. Not exactly just Audi and MBZ !!! Unfortunately the cost of being competitive knocked GM [Opel] out of the scene... leaving it ,for the time being, to Audi and MBZ. No reason if times were better they couldn't come back with Camaro's or Cadillacs. A crazy wish in today's times.
I have a Minichamps model of every Opel Calibra in that video link. They were great looking cars. Especially the McDonalds sponsored cars and the black and white CLIFF cars.
