Cadillac Announces ESCALADE IQ: The First All-Electric Escalade
General Motors

May 22, 2023

Motor vehicle Automotive design Electric blue Auto part Luxury vehicle

The Cadillac ESCALADE IQ will be revealed later this year and promises the same commitment to craftsmanship, technology and performance that has helped the Escalade nameplate dominate the large luxury SUV segment for the last 20 years. The ESCALADE IQ will join the LYRIQ and the upcoming CELESTIQ as Cadillac continues to build an all-electric portfolio.

The IQ naming strategy celebrates Cadillac introducing a different type of EV to the market — one that works in tandem with people’s daily lives and environments. The IQ designation is Cadillac’s EV nomenclature and first debuted on the LYRIQ.

When Cadillac will get rid of the Escalade ICE, all Escalade IQs will most likely be called only Escalade.
True.
What does the I and Q stand for? Neither of them say EV
Intelligence Quotient ??? :D   ...;) .

When a Lincoln sees it, it says "I Quit".

What does BMW's 'IX' "stand for"?
Or is the general question irrelevant?
Neither do I.
But Escalade has a lot of brand equity. To drop it or rename it "Escaladiq" would be a disservice to the brand.

And there's an IQL coming too.
I don't disagree, but I would have left it at 'Escalade'.

The IQ after that looks tacked on because it is. And it's absolutely meaningless, outside the fact that the rest of the named EV models that conclude with the 'IQ' as part of its name, i.e. CELESTIC, LYRIQ etc.

IF they wanted a new name that naturally ended with IQ, I'd be more receptive. I would propose

A T L A N T I Q

But Cadillac will do what they want to do, they always do.

Can we refer to the base IQ model as the "Low IQ" version?

It stands for "Anything sensible is already trademarked, so we had to resort to this." Not just BMW either...

Has GM said what IQ stands for? It must stand for something.

Q-ation

I actually like the sound of it but I've also wondered what it stands for.

I heard a rumor that if GM sells this in Mexico it will be called the Escalade QUE?. 🙃

Cadillac Atlantiq has a nice ring to my ears!

Didn't Chrysler have an Atlantic concept car? I'm thinking Chrysler might still have a patent - out of curiosity anyone know how the patent laws work? Meaning where the different lettered, but pronounced the same, naming concept works with patent laws.

Smart move having the Escalade EV have a proper EV platform and different styling.

Pleasantly surprised GM.

The IQ tack on isn't great. Just call it EscalaDIQ. Oh........wait, although it kind of fits too. 😛

Names are usually Trademarked, not Patented. Regardless, I dnn't think it can be similar for a similar product. But I'm not an expert, I just had a beer at a Holiday Inn last night... :)

That'd be a relevant example if BMW used actual names and tacked "iX" on a named model.

Tacking IQ behind Escalade is a forced solution to keeping the known Escalade name that doesn't fit in with the "all names must end in IQ directive.

Not much different then when Caddy went to all alpha numeric "names" except the Escalade of course. No sense messing around with a proven iconic name.

Agree - probably good for marketing also

Oh sure, I'm not saying to change it., it's just not very "tidy".

Maybe they should've called it Esiqalade lol.

For what it's worth, I also considered P A C I F I Q but there again sits Chrysler with PACIFICA.. So.. not sure what the trademark/patent/copyright
implications of all those are..

<EDIT>

Chrysler Atlantic was a gorgeous car by the way..

Chrysler design team of the 1990s were as good as could be found anywhere.
Had Atlantic been built it would have been an instant classic.

I really don't see the point of adding an IQ to the Escalade name.

Does anyone think the buyers would be otherwise unaware that it's a battery vehicle?

Who else needs to know?
It’s an Escalade of a different formula. Why not “IQ”? Escalades of different formulas have been named like that in the past.
Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT… 🤷🏽‍♂️

Should Range Rover drop the Velar, Evoque and the Sport part of the naming and all just be Range Rover?

The name Escalade IQ was weird when news first broke last year or whenever it did but it has grown on me. Only thing important is that it better be a looker and not be sharing ANYTHING but it’s Ultium tech with its Tahoe/Yukon EV cousins. Not even a door.
That dash in the spy shots looks lifted from the Celestiq with its screen spanning from pillar to pillar. As well as the 24” wheel design.
This looks to be closer in size to the Lincoln Aviator than the ICE Escalade. Does anybody else think the same?
Yes. The longer I keep looking at it. It’s giving off the same vibe of what the electric Wagoneer (Wagoneer S) is to the Grand Wagoneer.
