I was just looking at what kind of prices Caddies are fetching in Europe, and it seems like some dealers are actually offering 50% discounts on brand new cars.

This one for example:
http://eng.autoscout24.com/home/ind...=&make=17&model=15853&pricefrom=&euroto=&zip=

Loaded STS V8, MSRP 68k Euros, asking 33.9k. There are also two new loaded V6's listed for 28k Euros (MSRP 51k).

Are the margins that large that they can let these cars go for half price, or are they selling them below cost? Keep in mind that these prices include a 19% sales tax, so the dealer actually gets 28.5k Euros for a loaded STS V8.

On the contrary HoosierRon, manufacturers charge what people will pay. In Oz a 118i costs 38k before any useful options (ie Bluetooth for 790!).

NA wouldn't pay that much and I'm pretty sure BMW wouldn't attempt it.

That's not a good thing, no wonder why Europeans aren't buying any STS, the depriciation would be savage.

But Mikmak is also right, BMW prices in the US are nothing compared to those in NZ/Aus. Try $40,000 (About US26k) for a 116i Business manual with absolutely no options, a 330d for US75k again an SE manual with no options.

This is what happens when corporations are nothing more than tools of the socialist state. Soon enough, the U.S. will catch up.

Oh shush with that crap, Ron.

Prices in Europe vary wildly from country to country. The heavily-taxed Belgians have probably the cheapest sticker prices in Europe, while the moderately-taxed, and far less socialist Britons get reamed like a cheap whore. UK car prices are absurd.

Socialism has nothing to do with it. European list prices are higher because it's priced what the market will bear.

Socialist(ish) New Zealand has some of the world's lowest new car prices.

I've never seen an STS here. I see the odd CTS, and about as many Escalades and SRXs... but never ever an STS.
I do see STS including this nice arctic white:

Note that it has U.S dealer badge so it wasn't bought at local European dealerships. So don't be surprised official sales are so low. People prefer pay 40% less and import a car from the States on their own now when our currency is still very strong. The same goes for Corvettes, there are tenths of them in Warsaw but local dealership sold only a few this year. Porsche has even more to worry about since every second 911 I see is U.S spec.

I haven't seen new CTS yet. But it's because since the premiere it has been exhibited next to new Aveo and nobody wanted to have a look at it.

Powervette on a.... bus????

I might have seen one too, from the backside it seems it looks almost same as CTS to me, I was even about to correct my compatriot...

Yeah, you can often see Corvette rims or bumpers scattered randomly accross Warsaw...

More seriously - to give you an idea on what the currency rates have brought unto us, there are massive numbers of US spec almost-new Corollas or VWs driving around! And that's in Warsaw, where a huge percentage of cars are fleet, I believe it might be even more so in Silesia or Pomerania. I have even started seeing non-diplomatic-plate new Camries!

OTOH, Volkswagen started dumping Jettas into corporate fleets, as they can get them pretty cheap from Mexico and protect Golf prices.

At the same time Chevrolet charges premium prices for the HHR... What gives?

Yeah, that was pretty lame. Though recently I drove past Autopol and the lot looks deserted - are they closing?

powervette was drunk, able to take a picture though.
I hate buses. Living in a serious city with a few lines of underground would be just fine for me. In such case I would buy something more thirsty than my four-banger.

go and have a look at Nivette's lot. It would be impossible to find a free space for a single Smart there.
