KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 22 (Reuters) - A Missouri car dealer said on Thursday sales have soared at his auto and truck business since launching a promotion this week that promises buyers a free handgun or a $250 gas card with every purchase.

Max Motors, a small Butler, Missouri dealership that has as its logo a grimacing cowboy wielding a pistol, has sold more than 30 cars and trucks in the last three days, far more than its normal volume. And owner Mark Muller credits his decision to start offering buyers their choice of a $250 gas card or a $250 credit at a gun shop.

"This thing has taken off. Sales have quadrupled," said Muller. The store sells both used and new vehicles including General Motors (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and Ford (F.N: Quote, Profile, Research) products.

Every buyer so far "except one guy from Canada and one old guy" has elected to take the gun, Muller said. Muller recommends his customers select a Kel-Tec .380 pistol.

"It's a nice little handgun that fits in your pocket," he said.

Muller said the promotion was inspired by Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, who is vying with Hillary Clinton to be the Democratic nominee for the presidential election in November.

Shouldn't they also be including a free Bible with every car purchase?

BTW, I can't figure out why this promotion would be a decisive factor for so many people... Quadrupled sales???

Keeping your current vehicle and buying a gun from your own pocket makes a lot more sense for most people. If you're in the market for a new vehicle, that's a relatively small incentive anyways (there are usually thousands off all domestics)... which in most cases doesn't make for the inconvenience of buying from a dealer far away.

Unfortunately, $250 isn't enough to purchase the handgun that I really like: A Smith and Wesson M1911PD Tactical Rail Series, .45 ACP. It's around $1200. Kinda ridiculous since I can get a Smith and Wesson M&P15 (a civilian-spec M4 rifle) for $1300.

Wow, what a novel idea for a promotion. But human nature is interesting. Give them something free and they will flock to your place and buy your stuff. And to top it off, $250 off is nothing when it comes to vehicles, so it must be the gun. But $250 doesn't buy much gun either. Go figure.......

this reminds me of bowling for columbine where the local bank gave out free rifles for opening up an account with them

Yeah and Southerners get made fun of for being "hicks".

Ever notice all those nutcase "Militia" groups are all in the Midwest and Western states?

I think Michigan can boast the pièce de réstistance in white trash juxtaposition: a bowling alley with valet parking...

Doesn't matter though. This whole country is one big insane asylum!

The "recommended" pistol, the P-3AT, retails for $325, so unless it's on sale at the local gun shop they still need another $75 to buy it. $250 towards a firearm isn't much and wouldn't get me in the dealer.

I like the statement though. It's a good time to arm yourself in case it becomes illegal. I just hope these guns don't end up in the wrong hands.

I'd be too tempted to use it on the salesperson that I felt had shafted me!
Kinda what I was thinking. Get the car, get the gun, return to the dealer, turn the gun on the salesperson and take another car. The way I see it, its a two for one sale.

I don't know why but that reminded me of an archie bunker line.

Went something like this. "It's our first amendment right to carry arms".

"But archie the first amendment is about free speech"

"It's the same thing. With a gun in your hand you can make whatever kinda speech you want"

lol, salespeople beware.
