October 3, 2014

General Motors has told dealers to halt deliveries of the new 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups because of a pending safety recall to fix an airbag defect, just two weeks after shipments began for the high-profile launch.

In a note sent to dealers Thursday about the midsize pickups, GM said it has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of an “upcoming safety and noncompliance recall” to fix the airbag flaw. GM said that the pickups’ driver-side airbag connections “were wired incorrectly during the manufacturing process,” which could disrupt their deployment.

“This condition will cause the driver-side airbags to not function as designed and may adversely affect the crash performance of the driver-side airbags,” GM’s notice said.

High profile launch = high profile stop sale.

You wonder if the "old GM" would have done something like this.

I applaud the action taken here by the new GM. They are instilling a measure of confidence in the products they offer, yes - even if this is the 71st recall of 2014. They are doing what is necessary to build trust.

Thank God! This would have been an awful way to launch twin all new segment busting vehicles. However I really wonder how after all this vehicles platform is international in origin how this has not come up in the AUS, South-Pacific market. Unless the airbags were just a bad batch from a supplier.

I disagree.

Just another example of poor quality and reliability.

The airbag passenger presence system malfunctioned on the new 2014 Impala 2LTZ that my wife and I purchased on the way home on the day of purchase.

There is no trust being built - just multiple examples of poor safety issues in multiple vehicles, including new platforms.

Terrible.

This is the "Zero Defect" mentality that Barra is pushing.

It's great to see GM rapidly taking action on defects but it doesn't excuse the bigger issue of why they keep happening in the first place.

These are brand new products so how in the hell did they get out the door with issues? What is happening upfront for these issues to be missed in the first place? I'm concerned about GM's QC and it's getting old.

Well it's not good that they have to issue a stop sale so soon, it's best that they caught and address this defect now.

Don't forget folks - while it's easy to call the occurrence of this defect unacceptable, cars and trucks are the most complex mass-produced goods on the planet. If you've ever totally dismantled a late model car, you know how many parts are involved in today's cars. And all of them have to be assembled just right for the vehicle to work as intended. Getting the assembly perfect on day one of a new vehicle launch is not easy!

The best thing about this pending recall is that GM hasn't had too much time to sell the Colorado/Canyon and have them brought back in for the fix. They should still have them on the dealer's lot.

The only problem, telling the potential customer that the airbags need to be corrected before they can take it off the lot due to the faulty wiring process it went through while in assembly.

The airbag issue is NOT A NEW ONE!

The fact that Total Recall Motors had the nerve to continue to use this supplier shows how utterly incompetently run this company truly is. The launch should have been delayed, not a stop order after the fact.

Once again, the taxpayers bailed out a company that can't build safe products and can't engineer ones that won't be recalled.

This isn't building trust with anybody. It just gives off the impression that GM can't build it right in the first place.

C'mon GM, I love you, but get your chit together already.
