The NASCAR team owner is an avid car collector as well as a racer, and Saturday night Hendrick bought the very first 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat 700001 for $825,000. Hendrick employee Dale Ledbetter bid on behalf of his boss to purchase the 707-horsepower Hellcat. This is the only Hellcat painted in Stryker Red, a color only available on the Viper sports car.

All the proceeds from the Hellcat sale will go to Opportunity Village Foundation, a Las Vegas-based nonprofit that works with people who have intellectual disabilities.

The first to cross the block was a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, VIN No. 003. The jet black Z/28 raised $147,500.

One hour later, the very last of 1,964 Limited Edition 2015 Mustangs went up for auction. It hammered for $170,000.

The first 8L90 Corvette Stingray went for $400,000 the night before.

Charity cars sold at B-J over the past few years:
1. First C6 ZR1 sold at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2008 for $1 Million.

2. First C7 Stingray sold for $1.1 million.

3. First C7 ZO6 sold for $1 Million at B-J Palm Beach 2014.

4. First Production 2013 427 Convertible sold for $600k

5. First Production 2014 Z/28 sold for $650k

6. VIN #001 2015 Z/28 sold for $500k

7. 2015 Stingray VIN #001 sold for $400k

The point is first productions or VIN #'s 001 always bring bigger money than later variants. There have also been numerous charity Mustangs to cross the block well into the half million dollar territory. Barrett-Jackson hosts several big auctions per year that attract the attention of high rollers and the auto manufacturers themselves. This time around Chrysler got into the game. Good for them. I'm sure in January when the Scottsdale sale comes around, Ford will push one of their new Mustang variants for charity, and it too will bring big money. With the economy the way it is, the rich are getting richer... The rest of us, not so much...
