http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/18/oh-snap-consumer-reports-rips-aveo-a-new-one/

Consumer Reports isn't known for completely trashing cars in its reviews. In fact, the publication is more often criticized for going too easy on them and finding something to like in everything that passes through the CR garage. But dang if they didn't just tear apart the 2008 Chevy Aveo sedan, going so far as to say its big-bro Cobalt is an all-around better car and better deal for bargain shoppers. They cite Cobalt's comparable fuel economy, better handling, quieter more refined interior and, after discounts, better price.

The magazine calls the Aveo a "miserable little car" and, since they couldn't find the name "Aveo" anywhere in the car's interior, thinks GM might think so, too. CR says it readers certainly thought the Aveo was miserable, rating the hatchback and sedan variants at the very bottom of their classes.

Re: Aveo gets ripped a new a-hole by CR!

As someone who sells these for a living, a 4yr lease in an Aveo LT/Wave SE (with auto) is the same price as a 4 yr Cobalt LT/G5 SE (with auto). To buy the G5/Cobalt is only $30/month more than the Wave/Aveo. So to me, the G5/Cobalt for basically the same price as an Aveo/Wave is a no-brainer (american-built, bigger car, comparable gas mileage, better resale, etc, etc)
Dont get me wrong, I prefer the Aveo/Wave's LOOKS in the 4 door better than the 4 door G5/Cobalt but come on, when it comes to the all-mighty dollar, G5/Cobalt for the win!

However, for whatever reason, we cant keep the little Wave on our lots as a lot of these type of car buyers are looking to save every dollar possible (even if it is only a measly $30 (and no difference on a lease)

First off, I don't like the Aveo either, but a big **** you to CR.

Secondly...
The magazine calls the Aveo a "miserable little car" and, since they couldn't find the name "Aveo" anywhere in the car's interior, thinks GM might think so, too.
Does GM think my Envoy's a miserable car too? The Sonoma? They don't have their names anywhere inside the car.
Sure the Aveo sucks, but that was the absolute most stupid argument I've ever heard as to why a car stinks. Because the name of the car isn't anywhere inside? Spare me.

I am no fan of the Aveo, but I think CR is a miserable magazine and anyone who doesnt sip the kool-aid knows it.

But still I would tend to agree a Cobalt/G5 is just a much better value. If the Aveo had significantly better MPG then maybe a sacrifice would be in order, but it doesn't so why would you buy an AVEO over a Cobalt???

Re: Aveo gets ripped a new a-hole by CR!

I can see three reasons to buy an Aveo over a Cobalt:

1. Available hatchback model. If I were to choose an Aveo over a Cobalt this would be the main reason.
2. Looks. The Aveo looks "cute", whereas the Cobalt is kind of boring.
3. Size. I still see a lot of old GM mentality here. "why would anyone take a little car when they can get a big one?" Believe it or not, some people actually want a small car.

I've driven a couple of Aveos and never really thought they were that bad. Could use a bit more power (and auto-down windows with the pw option please), but not bad at all.

Weird, I've been sold out of Aveo's for a month. I only have about 8 Cobalts. If people compare the two, usually Cobalt wins. Some people do want the smaller car. Not to mention the 4 year 50,000 mile bumper to bumper for 2009.

4/50m? Thats like our Buick/Caddy/Hummer 4/80k...I wonder if GM Canada will bump our b-2-b to 4/80k as well???

Sad to hear that in a time where fuel efficience is paramount, GM fails in it's smallest car segment. GM needs to redesign this vehicle IN THE US and has to lead the pack in fuel efficiency if it wants better reviews. Pretty soon these cars could be GM's new truck/SUV style breadwinner, but not if it is left in it's current condition.

Your post makes entirely too much sense, and therefore needs to be deleted. :)

GM needs a class leading subcompact like Obama needs the black vote. GM simply is not in the ball game until they get a good, kick butt, small car. CTS, Vette, Malibu and Lambdas are great efforts and show what is good about GM, but they are not enough to make GM competetive as an automotive company. GM will continue to hurt hard until they get a good small car. A $40k Volt isn't going to help GM either. The only thing to balance their portfolio is small car that leads its segment.

The above statement will be even more apropos a year from now. I just don't see how GM is missing the boat on this.

100% agree with the power complaint. Barely breaking 100 HP is beyond weak. I also agree that every car should have auto-down windows standard (and on ALL windows, not just driver) But the G8 doesn't even get this option.

09 Aveo/Wave gets a new motor with 10more hp and 4 more mpgs (mpgs under the old system that Canada still uses...dont know what that works out under the new EPA)!

Re: Aveo gets ripped a new a-hole by CR!

If the Aveo had truly impressive fuel economy for its class, this thread would not exist, because it would serve the purpose of a subcompact.

Unfortunately the CR bias will remain even as the 2009 Aveo improves its numbers somewhat. GM wanted a small car quick, and did not care that the powerplant was essentially unchanged from a late 1990's Daewoo Lanos --- which itself is borrowed from old Opel designs, if memory serves. Real old. Like 1983 old or something.

When I saw the 2009 changes where GM says "High tech engine" for the Aveo, I did a double-take.

My mother-in-law has an Aveo. In pure city driving, the car barely clears 20mpg. That's just disappointing.

But in the real world, where you buy the car that's on the dealer's lot, it's hard to find a brand new Cobalt for under $12K - which is what she paid for the Aveo.

The price is not comparable to a Cobalt (or anything else).
Were I doin' the ****ering I believe I could get a well-equipped Aveo for under $9K after all offers.
I don't know what you expect from a under $9K new car, but I wouldn't expect it to be any more than bare minimal transport. Anything more is a bonus.
