Hope its not a repost....

General Motors product czar Bob Lutz says the new Vauxhall/Opel Insignia, given its global debut at London, will be the basis for the new Saturn Aura.

While the cars will share sub-systems, suspensions and powertrains, the Aura will have a completely different skin and interior.

“We’ve researched the Insignia around the world, including the U.S., as an internationally spectacular new design, but the Saturn version will be its own car,” he said.

GAHHHHHHHHH!!!!
WHY NOT???
It makes so much sense to just slap a Saturn badge on an Insignia and call it a day. It's cheap, nobody will accuse it of being a rebadge unless they've been to Europe, the Insignia is friggin' awesome...
Our Aura better look as good or better than the Insignia.

Wrong. On this site EVERYONE will call it a rebadge, if it has its own sheetmetal and interior or not.

Translation: The Insignia is too cool for us hillbillies in the US.

Bingo.

GM probably conducted "extensive research of the US market" and concluded that "Insignia's European design characteristics would not generate the necessary sales volume to realize a profit in an acceptable timeframe." Furthermore, "there is the potential that Insignia's modern design to adversely affect higher volume cars such as Chevrolet Malibu."

In other words, GM continues to be a mismanaged company.
They aren't going to deliver compelling products, and are more concerned with maintaining an acceptable volume of sales with mediocre product.

Sorry GM.
If Saturn was meant to be an "American Opel," then give Saturn ****ing Opels, otherwise, KILL THE BRAND!!
There is absolutely ZERO REASON why GM needs to spend more money it doesn't have to reskin and rework an interior for the American market, when there's abso-****ing-lutely nothing wrong with the European version.

Lutz said:
“Why introduce a two-door version of the four-door with the same sheetmetal?” he says.
Because GM shouldn't be wasting its money!!!

The ONLY thing GM needs to do with Insignia is localize it for American regulations and buy a batch of Saturn and Aura badges.
THAT'S IT!!!

Stupid GM. :bio::

Bob Lutz... check yourself into a convalescent home. You are obviously a senile old man. You are passed your prime. Get lost!!!

Wasn't Lutz just recently quoted as saying (re Ep II) that vehicles would share many components but look completely different from each other, ie a Malibu looks nothing like the new Invicta. He also said an exception would be Saturn where they could simply be rebadged Opels since those brands aren't sold on the same continent and nobody would notice. I know I just saw this somewhere. Looks likes he's done a 180.

What the thread title should read is: Aura NOT to be success. Why even bother keeping the Saturn brand alive? If it's going to be watered down Opel's it's not worth wasting money on. Go big or go home.

Boy ... for a company that is "blowing through its' LIMITED cash", GM certainly wastes LOTS OF MONEY ... "Americanizing" machines that are generally widely accepted everywhere else in the world. Safety or emissions ... OK! Anything else ... forget it! Remember YOU are fighting for survival in the US market.

GM's "domestic management" MUST GET THEIR COLLECTIVE EGOES out of this and "do what is right" for the US business, the American consumer, and America.

What ever GM does, they MUST maintain the very low fuel consumption already achieved in the UK/EU ... about 2.4 to 1.75 gallons(US) combined average per 100 miles. BTW, GM/Vauxhall(Opel) currently have about 50 machines in this category available in the UK today! And, they are NOT ALL SMALL VEHICLES!

I agree with mgescuro, what a stupid decision. The insignia is perfect. What's wrong with Saturn having a nicer car than Chevy, isn't Saturn supposed to be a little more upmarket? What a bunch of bull****.

GM NA will never, ever learn! What a stupid idea. The economies of scale do not provide for GM did build a separate model only for the NA market. Keep it simple Bob, just use the same tooling as for the rest of the world. Quit building these US only models that don't sell.

Aura might be going away if Saturn merges with BPG.

I think most would find it acceptable since we don't have the Opel brand here.

I don't think there was a uproar on this site when GM badged the Opel Astra as the Saturn Astra.

Rebadge jobs like the G5 and the Uplander are the kind that people get pissed off about.
