Audi Badly Wants Q2 and Q4 Names from Fiat, Italians Say No
Friday, January 16, 2015
by Dan Mihalascu

It’s no secret that Audi wants to build as many SUV models as possible, having already launched the Q3, Q5 and Q7 and preparing to bring a Q1 to market in the near future as well.

But it appears that the Germans are running out of naming options, as the rights for the Q2 and Q4 nameplates belong to Fiat. You probably remember that Alfa Romeo used the Q2 and Q4 badges to designate its two- and four-wheel drive models such as the 159 Q4.

And although they’re not using the nameplates at the moment, the Italians are reportedly refusing to allow Audi to do it. The Germans have approached Fiat Chrysler Automobiles about this issue, but the response was not the one they hoped for. Fiat says Alfa Romeo got the Q2 and Q4 names first, and it’s hard to argue with that.

I don't blame them for saying no. Why hand a competitor an advantage?

However, I'm wondering what Marchionne would get in a horse trade if he licensed them the right to the name? He doesn't have to stop Alfa from using the designations himself later on, just let them use it for a fee.

True. Before deciding on the Q# designation for their SUVs and Crossovers, they should have done some research. Or maybe Piech & Co. thought they'd just get their hands on Alfa eventually and it would be a moot point?

Regardless, it kind of makes you appreciate how hard it is to get a good naming for a brand's range. Ewe's recent exploits on the CT# and XT# may not sit well with all of us, but I can sympathize with trying to hash something out when other companies own a designation here or there to ruin your portfolio's nomenclature.

Good for Fiat. And with the bitter relationship between FCA and VAG CEOs I don't think this will end well. If Fiat agrees to sell the names, it won't be cheap.

For the time being, Audi can make the Q1+1 and the Q 2+2. :lmao:
Really??? Q1, Q3, Q5, and Q7 aren't enough?
What are Q2 and Q4 needed for? 'Coupe' versions of their crossovers? Why bother, the BMW and MB versions are both stupid AND ugly.
Just call them QC1, QC3, etc. if they can't resist building them.
I wonder how this will affect their Q2 and Q4 results

I don't feel sorry for Audi at all. These stupid alphanumeric names box manufacturers into a corner.

So... use Q1 Sportback and Q3 Sportback. Q5 Sportback, Q7 Sportback.

You don't even have any even-numbered crossovers out, so don't complain. Use what you have.

There are so many different ways around this.

Audi is just bitching for the sake of bitching.

Not bitching, they just want to devalue Alfa.
VAG has the cheese. They'll fork it over. Marchionne needs the money. It's just a matter of price.

not to mention "NICE" DSG gear boxes that VAG does NOT want to share
Audi could just end up buying alfa for Q2.
They could do 2Q and 4Q but anyone with OCD would go crazy when looking at the lineup

LOL! There you go.....
Little boys being little boys. Holden let Range Rover use Evoque when they have the rights to that name, and were about to release the Evoke. Would it be that much of a gift anyway. If Alfa now put out a Q2 people are likely to think Audi anyway.
Maybe Sergio will demand that Alfa gets to rebadge the Audi Q2 and Q4 if they are indeed created.

For what purpose would he want to rebadge a low volume Audi Q2 or Q4 crossover coupe?
