Aptera moving from R&D to production
After months of long days and late nights teasing out all the details necessary to turn this dream machine into a reality, Aptera is announcing that they have completed the design phase for the Typ-1. They are now ready to get busy with the awesome task of manufacturing their aerodynamic vision. And busy they will be.

They already have the financing in place but there is still much that will need to be done before production can begin. First, and this may interest some of you, they need to hire "a bunch" of people. Next, they have to move into their new building (location undisclosed). They also want to do a little more advanced crash testing and refining of the manufacturing process. Then there are plans to build an Aptera store from which to conduct their sales and service. I expect that their showroom will be pretty empty for a while since more than a thousand vehicles have already been reserved.

The Plus and minus signs on the gas and brake pedal is a nice feminine touch (cute).
retarded looking car, I would personally feel like a jackass driving this thing around everyday, no matter how 'clean' the car may be
Price it the same as a motorcycle and i'd get one in a heartbeat.

From the web site:
How much will the Aptera cost?

The approximate price for the all electric version is $26,900 and the plug-in hybrid $29,900. These prices are subject to change any time before we begin production.

You can spend over $24,000 on a Gold Wing if you want.
I like the out-of-the-box thinking on the Aptera. I hope to see more unconventional solutions to the fuel economy/pollution problem in the future, especially if it means lighter weight cars without defaulting everything into gutless, subcompact, hatchbacks.

That said, I fully expect the Aptera to be be the disappointment of the post 35mpg CAFE era. I suspect impact protection is somewhere between a car and a motorcycle, for one thing. I'll bet that the outrageous fuel economy numbers will drop and the price will rise significantly--if it ever makes it past a prototype stage. I really see the Aptera as a 3-wheeled piece of vaporware marketing. Looking at the details of it, the whole shroud seems rather hollow. But far-be-it from me to stand in their way. Prove me wrong Aptera!
Ummm no! The unusal approaches takes to increase efficiancy are kinda cool. But over all, No Way!

I was thinking more along the lines of about $5k, thats roughly what a sanely priced normal beginner motorcycle costs right? I bet in 10 years time after inflation is considered, thats what an Aptera-like car will cost.
Who would spend 30k on that? That's like $15k more than an Aveo... which is a much better car. Even at $4 a gallon it would take ~10 years to pay itself off. Who wants to spend at least 10 years with a boring, slow, ugly, unpractical, unsafe piece of garbage?

And I don't care how well designed it is. It's lightweight. And lightweight means massive g-force if another car hits you.
Why does everyone keep saying this is unsafe? It is made from very strong composite. It has crumple zones. It has air bags. It has a safety cell.
Its faster than an 80s vette as auto AC on hot days. This thing is great.

I love Jeeps and sports cars but the little boy wants a Jetson's car and this might be my next vehicle...depending on Ford's and Chevy's RWD vehicles in the next two years.
This seems like a very safe vehicle.
