Apple building a car?

Apple is Working on a Car
Mac Observer

Apple is going into the car business. According to BusinessInsider, an Apple employee wrote to say that his group was working on something that will, "give Tesla a run for its money." My own sources back this up.

I learned last week that Apple has been poaching employees from Tesla. I don't mean the kind of tit-for-tat headhunting that goes on between all Silicon Valley companies (now that the no-poaching agreements are out).

Bloomberg reported that Tesla and Apple have been in a hiring war for some time, but the focus of that report was general hiring. There are all kinds of positions that are needed whether you're making cars, computers, or kiosks. Human resources, software engineers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, human resources, artists, designers, recruiters, supply chain managers, secretaries...the list is long.

But what I learned is that Apple has been looking for—and acquiring—the kind of people from Tesla with expertise that is most suited to cars. So much so that I went from being a doubter to a believer almost instantly.

From another source who travels in more rarified circles than yours truly, I also learned that a lot of people at the top in Silicon Valley consider it a given that Apple is working on a car. This is circumstantial, at best, but if you're going to crowd-source wisdom, you could do a lot worse than polling the C-suite.

with out saying the job titles of the poached people I would guess APPLE is working on a car interior/infotainment system VS a "whole" car and maybe contracted by an existing builder?
a Google car furthers GOOGLES "CORE" competencies of data management/harvesting/searching
where as APPLE outside of taking it to GOOGLE is not really focused on the same business "model"

No one really knows until Apple releases the product/service.

The Google Car is an interesting idea and does leverage Google's core competency. That being said, it is rumored that the Google Car is an UBER competitor.
It's an interesting vision to be sure.

That being said, Apple has been trying to pull in Tesla workers, with signing bonuses of upwards of $250,000. Few are biting.
Apple has something up their sleeves, but it's most likely some unified infotainment system for automobiles and not a car itself. Think of it as CarPlay v2.0.
BUT... Elon Musk has been seen at the Apple campus for some unknown reason. So you never know.

the GOOGLE car is a TAXI/public transit competitor more then UBER as OWNERSHIP of the vehicle is not intended
Uber is reportedly looking for ways to implement the self-driving car, so it won't have to deal with the whole drivers aspect. Apple is an interesting player. What I do not understand, is why Apple seems to want to compete with Tesla, that already has a hard time staying afloat.

Definitely.

Uber is perfect for the Google Car. I could imagine going to a party or a bar in the city with a few people and getting picked up and taken home by a "chain" of Google Cars, that all follow the lead car and follow each other very closely with V2V communications.

I could also imagine a constantly uplink with Google and a dramatically improved and constantly up-to-date Google Maps, so long as an area has Google Cars driving in it.

If priced appropriately, I could see the Google Car as being very influential.

I am sure Apple wants to be in all aspects of your daily life, and as of right now, "in a car" is one of their weaknesses. With the move to autonomous cars, driving dynamics and such will actually become less important, as you sit there and focus on your iPad. Plus, they have a hell of a lot more money to throw at it than Tesla does.

I understand... But why not team up with Tesla? Did something happen between Apple and Elon Musk?

Right now, it's just media speculation.
Apple doesn't have a license to operate self-driving vehicles in CA. Only a handful have been issued, and Apple isn't one of them.

Tesla has infrastructure in place and a plan for cars, batteries, technology, home battery tech, etc etc.

Apple's up to something. But what it is? Only Apple know.
That being said, a Apple Car was something Jobs had wanted to do before he passed away. Along with a watch and TV.

Who says they aren't in some way?

^ This. Much like the long rumored TV, who knows if it will ever come to fruition.
If every company that aspires to do something in the largest consumer market in the world, starts out for itself, we will get a lot of fragmentation. Tesla needs a broader basis for itself, in terms of shared charging points, battery packs, etc. Or it will be overrun by the established car brands.

the APPLE TV I see as a perfect fit for APPLE and it has NOT come out beyond there set top box ATV

I think if APPLE and Tesla joined forces to bring out a self driving car I think even then Googles attempts would have a challenger except I get the impression GOOGLE does NOT want to build the car BUT the "ECOSYSTEM" the car works in and have Toyota/GM ETC build cars to GOOGLE's specs
Well, we heard reports all over the internet (and form some reliable tech sites) that Apple was working on a TV and was going to release an actual Apple branded Television. No the Apple TV Device, but an Actual Apple branded TV. I read that going back to the beginning of 2013, and nothing yet, so I'll take the reports of Apple working on a Car with a very large grain of salt.

A former boss of mine and good friend is a pretty high-up in Silicon Valley. He's actually ridden in the so-called "Minivan."
It is NOT a self-driving car.

He will say that Apple is building "something." And Apple is ****ing with the media. More or less.

So I'll say it again... It is NOT a self driving car.

If Apple was in fact working on a TV, it makes sense for them to wait a bit. It's a very cutthroat industry, with even the giants not making any money off the products. So it's gotta be something truly innovative.
Acquiring the LED panels is easy, as they own a portion of Sharp. They can easily rebrand the AQUOS 4K panels.
Oh man, I would HATE to have a car that needs daily updates to get started and I would feel behind the current trend after half a year...
I heard they will be partnering with Cadillac to bring its Cue system as its infotainment center.
