General Motors unveiled a trio of small car concepts at the 2007 New York Auto Show — the Beat, Trax and Groove — and left it up to the public to decide which model should make production. After tallying the votes, the Beat emerged as the victor — receiving nearly 50 percent of the vote — and it looks as though the small car's progression from concept to production is moving right along.

This is some impressive.... camo. Have not seen "hard" camo like that before in spyshots.

I think I saw an actual prototype disgised on the hollywood extra that looked like the concept but watered down quite a bit. I guess Bob Lutz' "gota have" products don't apply to Daewoo designed vehicles, which means the small cars that are about to become all the rage! I hate to be negative, but GM needs to get off the small car=cheap car theme. With gas prices the way they are, people are going to want a small, fuel efficient car but still have all the comforts, and looks, of the larger cars they can no longer afford to put gas in. If they don't change this mentality, they will get eaten alive again by Toyondassan! Or maybe y'all are seeing something more promising that I'm not?

I don't believe for a second that this is the Beat. That IS the current Matiz with a mucked up front end and fenders. I was under the impression that the Beat would be a taller vehicle. I'm 99% sure that this is not what the Beat is going to look like... perhaps it's some sort of drivetrain mule, but that's the current Matiz body.

Actually just checked out the pics again... looks like there's a valve in the rear end below the rear bumper, and some weird plug-in below the right rear taillight. Could it be a natural gas mule (many of the other Daewoos are CNG-capable) or an electric / hybrid version?

Nice catch, can't believe I didn't see it the first time. The reddish thing under the bumber could be a testing instrument of some sort, but the thing under the taillight... it really looks like a plug.

this is not the beat compared to the Chinese pictures that were shot of the beat this car is not even close. and hitman the "camo" on this car is actually hard plastic. Its a little more expensive to make than the diapers we see in countless other shots and therefore its not used as often but it has been used in the past a notable example is a Mercedes tester a few years back that donned this type of camo. Also on my trips to Milford me and my accomplice have seen alot of Euro GM's running around so it does not surprise me that Maitz testers are out and about. Maybe this particular tester was testing a powertrain that could be used in the beat

Maybe GM just slapped a fake plug on it so that we'd notice it and raise a hubbub over it...Lutz is probably watching this thread and laughing his head off...

Not the Beat body...

We have already seen a Beat mule that looks alot like the Beat show car...

Maybe Beat parts underneath, but not the Beats' body...

It's a mule people...yeesh.

This Beat mule is testing the chassis and maybe some of the running gear. It doesn't reflect the actual design at all.

Time for another refresher course on the difference between "mules" and "prototypes" I guess.

Mules are the often hacked up looking bodies testing the chassis, motor or other running gear. Sheet metal from old cars or specially fabricated panels and a healthy does of pop rivets are common with mules. Sometimes you'll see a mule that has a next gen front end tacked onto the current body.

Prototypes are the test cars with the sheet metal that reflect the design. The fit and finish can still be rough on these. Prototypes usually have much more camo on them than mules.

This can't be the Beat, it looks just like the current Matiz/Spark.
it is the maitz/spark the taillights are a big time giveaway. they did a good job hiding the front but those taillights are unmistakable. However this could be a mule that is possibly testing power train or drive components for the beat but otherwise it looks like a maitz to me.

You say that with sarcasm, but it's obviously true! Many people might not know the difference between a mule and a prototype, so it's helpful to explain the difference.

Right when I saw the tail lights I thought Matiz. I hope to GM that this isn't the Beat. If it is, it's garbage.

Hah well no I wasn't really being sarcastic at all. The 2 are confused quite a bit.

I would guess the biggest problem is that people probably aren't reading the text with the photos.
