The latest review of the CTS-V from the Ottawa Citizen. Enjoy.

Imagine BMW's chagrin. Not only does its flagship supersports sedan, the all-conquering M5, get trounced, but the car doing said trouncing is from -- Gasp! Shock! Horror! -- North America and not one of its traditional German competitors. Worse yet, the car stomping all over its previous hegemony wears a Cadillac -- yes, a Cadillac -- badge. Oh, the shame.

Cadillac's all-new, monstrously motored CTS-V is both quicker and faster than the once-dominant M5. Powered by a new 6.2-litre, supercharged V8 only recently liberated from the fire-breathing Corvette ZR1, the CTS-V boasts 556 horsepower, 551 pound-feet of torque and can accelerate to 96 kilometres an hour in just 3.9 seconds.

An M5, by comparison, boasts 500 horsepower, 383 lb-ft and takes 4.7 seconds to accelerate to 96 km/h. Surely, the mighty cannot fall further.

Oh, yes it can.

I love that! Now when we get reviews exactly like that talking about either Mid-size cars or compacts, THEN I'll celebrate.

Man, the M5 only makes 383 pound-feet of torque , not even 400? That sucks. Camaros were making that in the last century.
Yeah, but the M5 is a BMW, man! Get with the program. The Camaro sucks because, well, it's domestic.

I thought we all knew that line of reasoning already.

Some people who have no faith in GM think that the government is needed to save the Company. I happen to think that the government (and GM's own management!) needs to get out of the way and simply let the talented designers and engineers do their jobs. We have seen in the Enclave, the CTS (in all its fabulous iterations!), the Corvette (in all of its fabulous iterations!) and presumably the upcoming Volt the promise of a successful company that produces no-excuses vehicles. The CTS-V is an example of that.

OMG!!! A piece of journalism that stays on focus and rates the car for it's merits and capabilities without the pot shots of "the company that has lost billions, "company that produces gas guzzlers", "Toyota is eating them alive"......

Good Point, management does not need to get out of the way though, you just need better management. GM has always had tons of mangers and bean counters, but they were just not so risk averse in the past.

Example- Less Goverment intevention + better management = 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz

More goverment intervention + inept mangement = 1982 Cadillac Cimmaron

BTW, anyone know when the CTS V is expected to be in the showrooms?

I love hearing things like this about GM products.

I read the Comparison in R&T I think. Needless to say, I had a big grin on my face when I saw the Verdict.

A silly article from an amatuar auto "journalist". My neighbor has a 600-hp nitroused 240sx with racing slicks that would demolish the CTS-V around the ring, but that doesn't make it a better car. When the CTS-V wins a comparision test from real enthusist who value driving dynamics over lap times, then you guys can celebrate. Until then, these childish responses just makes GMi look like a refuge for xenophobic blockheads who have never hit a road course in their entire lives and know nothing about the qualities that make great cars so compelling to drive.

amatuar amateur
comparision comparison
nitroused not a word
enthusist enthusiast

I will take the amateur (who can spell) as well as the amateurs at Road & Track who did a comparison.
Is R&T childish or xenophobic...both?

I will give you a hint.

"I'm sure BMW will be glad to raise the bar again with the next M5, but for now the V is king."

Spelling??...phttthpt...I could care less, its a message board and you knew what I was saying.

And as for Road and Tracks opinion, they're an OK rag, but they make the same mistake as the thrid rate newspaper: making a comparision based on lap times. Kia could come out with a monster sedan that may be able to smoke both these cars around a track, but I would rather know whether GM has caught up to the Germans in making a great dricving sports sedan.

How exactly does one "dricve"?

Is BMW the Ultimate Dricving Machine?

I know that they have iDricve to control the radio and NAV....

Actually you are writting, if you were speaking, then you would be...

nevermind...

Someone with your mad spelling and reading comprehension "skillz" would obviously know the difference between good driving dynamics the ones that is are bad, right...

Like good flan and bad flan.....

Please stop, your weaving in the lanes, you might get pulled over.

How much torque is acting on the transmission is irrelevant, torque acting on the wheels is what moves a car, and that depends on the gearing. An engine with a lower redline NEEDS a higher torque output to make up for the longer gearing you have to use.

the cobalt ss isn't too far behind the m5...9 seconds!

so the cts-v handles AND rides better than the m5...someone actually has the gall to speak up against the v?

with the same number of gears, they both have similar ratios. the v has 45% more torque, and it doesn't have 45% higher gear ratios:rolleyes:

the only issue i had with the article is he says the tranny is 'engineered'...it's all in the software. the 6l80e is dual clutching - it can shift as quickly as anything. with the torque converter locked, there's no more power loss than the wet clutches dct are using.

Not really. First of all the M5's time is from 2004...before a few critical sections of the Nordschleife were repaved, the track is faster now. Second, it's a magazine time, and sportautos lap times are always a good bit slower than the manufacturer claims.

The reason for that is simple, mags get loaded press cars, do a lap even if the conditions aren't ideal and they're expected to return them in one piece.
Manufacturers show up with hand-picked no-options cars and heat-cycled tires, wait for the best conditions, fiddle with things like tire pressures and keep trying until they get the result they're hoping for.

That's a good point, but another thing to consider is not only the peak torque number is, but what torque (and thus power) is occurring at All rpms in the necessary range. I'd be willing to bet, that even after you adjust for the gear ratio of the M5's redline compared to the CTS-V's redline (8xxx/6xxx), the CTS-V is still putting down more torque at half it's redline, than the M5 is putting down at half it's redline. And yes, i'm too lazy to look up the exact redlines for each of the engines.
