DETROIT (AP) -- Ford Motor Co. says it will pay performance bonuses to all hourly and salaried workers in the U.S. and Canada and its management team around the world because the company is making progress toward becoming profitable again.
Chief Executive Alan Mulally said in a message to all workers on Wednesday that the Dearborn, Mich.-based company fell short of its market share goals in North and South America, and Asia. But it met objectives in all other categories including cost reductions, quality, cash flow and financial results.

Ford lost $2.7 billion last year and $12.6 billion in 2006. But Mulally said in the message that the global company is poised to become profitable again next year.

WTH??? Rewarding all employess when the company STILL isn't making a profit, but just because they're making progress?

Either Bill Ford not taking any money REALLY freed up the bottom line or they're just idiotic. What makes them think the union won't end up demanding all kinds of crazy stuff again next time around if Ford actually does make a profit by then. The UAW will say "You are making a profit now and can afford to pay the workers. You gave the entire company bonuses when you were losing money, so you can pay up now you're really raking in the dough!"
