Brooke Shields highlights VW Routan ad campaign

Volkswagen is using model and actress Brooke Shields and a virtual baby-making Web site to sell its Routan minivan, which arrives at dealerships late this week.

In an ad campaign launched this week, Volkswagen uses Shields to persuade young, affluent couples considering purchasing a minivan that they can meet their families' needs while purchasing a stylish European brand, said Brian Thomas, a Volkswagen general manager of marketing and communications.

"There's this notion of Volkswagen magic inside a minivan," Thomas said. "It's almost like there's a little Beetle in there, a whole little Beetle trying to get out."

The Routan begins hitting dealership lots later this week with a base priceof $25,390, including $690 shipping.

In the ads, Shields plays a serious spokeswoman addressing high birth rates that she says are caused by couples who want a Routan but believe they need children to drive a minivan.

In keeping with the theme of conception, Volkswagen is launching a Web site later this month that will allow people to make virtual Routan babies they can send to friends through e-mail and social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace, complete with "a healthy dose of Routan information," Thomas said.

Has anyone seen the ad yet?

Haha...that's funny! I like clever commercials. But the fact is, they don't often guarantee sales success.

It's funny and I like it but it's still a minivan.

I can see it not making too much sense in a print add though...
Most of the print ad is just text from the VW website. But the center is the actress standing in front of the van, with a quote that doesn't make any sense in the context:

Nothing else on the page says anything about birth control, or whatever she's advertising. The only purpose she seems to serve is to obscure the sliding door.

Yeah, the "German engineering" thing is downright annoying when referring to a vehicle designed and built in America by Chrysler. Besides, does VW see "German engineering" as the only selling point of this minivan? It is spacious, neatly appointed, it is an opportunity to drive a Chrysler Voyager that is not downright disgusting inside, 80s looking on the outside and does not wear the dreaded badge. That's the selling point.

The Chrysler vans are also the product of German engineering, in the sense that they were engineered by a German-owned company.
