Theoretically this is possible, it would be expensive, but why not allowing the driver to select which powertrain they would want to use. Essentially its an AWD configuration without all of the computer mumbo-jumbo.
In RWD configuration power is transferred from the engine to the transfer box, to the axle.
In FWD configuration power is transferred from the engine, to the transfer box, to the axle.
In 4WD configuration power is transferred from the engine, to the transfer box, and then shared amongst the axles.

There would be obvious weight problems. It would probably weight a little more than a current AWD system, however you are losing weight by not having a computer do all the work for you. I think it would be an interesting concept, even if it stayed in concept form, so what do you guys think?
