I've searched for about 2 hours and can't seem to find anything on this.

My '97 Camaro high beam switch does not seem to latch anymore. It was really hard to get to latch for a while and now no longer latches at all. The high beams do still come on if I hold the lever back.

How hard a fix is this or a better job for a repair shop? I don't mind getting my hands dirty but I also don't want to fudge up my steering wheel or air bag. Any tips or fixes would be greatly appreciated since I drive in the country a lot.

Thanks in advance,
Z

does it move forward like some of the newer multifunction levers? My CTS apears to have the same type as my S-10 albeit a modern interpretation, but if you move it forward it holds.

I've had the car for 5 years and it's always been a pull to latch, not the newer push style. I'm pretty sure you can't even push it foward at all. You got to remember, this is a 1997 model(built Nov. '96 actually).

you need a new multifunction switch.

not horrible if you have the tools, you need to remove the air bag, then remove the steering wheel, and the cancel cam assembly and top plate, they are held on with a snap ring, and you need a special tool to remove the top plate. you have to compress the plate to remove the hold down clip and the tool is needed for this.

after you have the column stripped down you can remove the multifunction switch by removing the torx bolts in it. usually have torx heads, may be a 7mm as well if not torx.

if you dont feel confident enough to perform the work, then i wouldnt recommend doing it yourself. there is a possibility of destroying the air bag, or personal injury, or also destroying the SIR coil. anything is possible.

Thank you very much. That's the response I was looking for. I'm not in a position to buy one-time tools right now and figured it would require them.

Once again, thank you very much.

I have the same problem Zujin has (mine is a '00 SS). To switch to high beam you pull on the stalk until it clicks. To switch them off again, do the same. It's also described like that in the manual. Same goes for all 4th-gen Camaros.

The stalk does not move forward at all.

If there is a newer switch I could retrofit I'd love to do that. Triple-X08, do you have a recommendation which model of switch to use?
