One day, in the Pontiac Design Studio, there was a power failure. But the designers, dedicated lot that they are, kept right on working. When the lights came back on, all you could hear were screams of, "What is it?" and, "Kill it! Kill it!". But by the time the villagers could gather their torches and pitchforks, it had gotten away.

A mighty search was organized, but it's lair was found too late. That's right. It had reproduced. Little tire treads led off in every direction. A fearsome ugly had been loosed upon the world.

Back at GM headquarters, all were worried. "What have we done? What can we do?" echoed through the hallways.

But the youngest little designer said, "Why don't we just recall them?"

"But will that work? Will they come?"

We can only hope so. But until that day, when the last of them has been rounded up and hidden away from sight, be wary. And if you happen upon one of these hideous monsters, avert your gaze. And above all, don't touch it. Because even though this ugly is only skin deep, you don't want to get any on you.

Not to ruin a good run, but why are people including "exploding" in their posts? Not a single one of the 32 complaints the NHTSA has received for this one and only fuel related investigation includes a report of fire, never mind crashes or injury.

If you want to go on about fire, 33% of the complaints they received on the Mini investigation opened the day after the Aztek Rendezvous investigation include fire.

185 HP!

No but seriously. It's a shame they didn't stick closer to the concept. That was actually kind of cool.

i sincerely hope you are being sarcastic about this. GM was always given **** about not bringing concepts to market, and then they did it with the Aztec, and it didnt work. you cant have it both ways.... GM did what peeple said to do, and then they all ran away with thier tails between thier legs. maybe the customer is NOT always right

It didn't work because it was completely different (as far as styling). You can bet your ass if they made it look like the concept, it would have done much better. The Aztek was / is a great idea. They just made it hideous.

My wife has put 118,000 miles on her 2001 Aztek and she loves it. Gets 28 mpg on the highway and the only replaced part (non-maintenance) is a right front wheel bearing. GM sold more than 90,000 Azteks and I'll bet almost none to fleets, unlike many other GM models. I don't ever recall seeing an Aztek on a rental lot or with a rental bumper sticker on the back. Ugly, that's a matter of opinion. Practical, versatile, reliable...without a doubt.

The Rendezvous may be ungainly from certain angles, especially if you're sober and have good eyesight, but it, if anything, deserves credit for pioneering the "crossover" concept: minivan versatility without being a minivan. It's a basically sound design ruined by GM's poor quality, poor engineering and lack of attention to design detail. Had it been designed by a competent car company, it would be a flawless vehicle. My Europhilic parents have hung on to their Rendezvous, despite endless quality control and reliability problems, because it's an all-around good design.

While I'm no fan of the Aztek, I don't understand why it's been singled out to be lambasted by the public as one of the ugliest vehicles ever made. I can name a dozen uglier cars, half of them from GM.

Yes, GM has made some ugly cars, but nothing in my my opinion comes close to the Aztek. As a matter of fact, I think it is the ugliest vehicle ever produced and that includes the Yugo. I do wonder, though, whether the Aztek will assume some style status down the road. I remember thinking the 59 Cadillac and Chev were some ugly until about 10 years ago. Now I love their looks.
