The global reveal of the 2019 GMC Sierra is coming up, straight from Detroit on Thursday, March 1 at 3:00 PM Eastern on Facebook Live. (We know you're as giddy as we are.)

Ahead of that announcement, details are beginning to emerge on some unique features that the 2019 Sierra will offer.

A report from the Wall Street Journal (subscription required) says that a carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic bed will be available on the new Sierra. Rumors that such a feature was under development have been kicking around since late last year.

If confirmed, the use of carbon fiber anywhere on a pick-up truck would be a world first. Such beds would bring the clear benefit of a significant drop in weight while strengthening the bed's structure and bolstering its resistance. However, carbon fiber is expensive, and exactly how much this feature would add to the purchase price of a Sierra is yet to be determined. Expect to see it featured in only the high-end trims of the Sierra and, potentially, the Chevrolet Silverado, before eventually becoming available in other GM products.
