The next Opel Insignia, sold as the Buick Regal in the U.S., has been caught testing in new spy photos.

As we can see from the body lines, the Regal is moving to a hatchback five-door body style with the current four-door sedan version likely to be cancelled. A station wagon variant is expected to join the lineup about six months after the car launches, but U.S. availability is unknown at this point.

Overall the wheelbase in expected to be stretched by about 10 cm, though the car should be about 440 lbs lighter than the current model.

A 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine will likely be the 2017 Buick Regal’s base engine, while a more powerful option will be available, though the specific engine remains a mystery.

Styling will be heavily influenced by the Monza Concept which was shown at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. A large digital dashboard design that was previewed by the concept is also expected to make its way into the production version along with head-up display and OnStar 4G LTE Wifi.

The redesigned 2017 Buick Regal will likely hit the market in late 2016 as a 2017 model year.

If there is a next-gen Regal in the US, it should be a coupe, at least as an option.

The current sedan is very nice but is unnecessary with the Verano and Lacrosse.

It will also be lighter by 440 pounds and the 1.5 L turbo provides torque and power at low revs. If this engine is mated to the new 8-speed transmission, it should be enough for many buyers.

Just look at how well the Buick Encore is selling. Even with the old 1.4L turbo, sales are good. Better than I anticipated. Many consumers are satisfied as soon as the car has enough power to safely get at highways speeds.

My understanding is this will ride on the same platform as the new Malibu.
I think this car is begging for a Voltec version. Especially the wagon. Considering the Malibu has a Volt derived hybrid system it should be doable.
And if they build it in Oshawa I will be standing at my local Buick dealer with a check in my hand.

I don't think there were ever rumors of Regal moving to the Alpha platform. If there was, it was nothing more than someone on the internet who started something that was repeated. There's never been any doubt that the next gen Regal (like the upcoming new gen Malibu) was going to be anything but Epsilon based, and this dates back a couple of years.

For the record, Alpha is not going to be used as the basis for volume "family car" replacements. If an Alpha does end up in a Buick showroom, it would be as something unique, most likely a coupe or convertible (not to be taken as any type of inside knowledge of an upcoming vehicle, just the mindset with the powers that be).

What is likely to show up in the Buick showroom is a version of the Omega.

As a side note, there is still a contingent of people at GM who would like to do an Impala replacement as a RWD Alpha or Omega based sports sedan, and it goes very high up the chain of command at GM including at the decision making level. Problem is that other items have higher priority, and the need to manage limited resources (money and personnel) as well as getting most out of existing platforms and systems as well as utilizing production capacity without building new plants.

In short, there's a lot more that goes into deciding to OK development on a car than a convincingly wide range of key supporters within a car company.

....And it's not just GM.

Ralph Gilles has been very open in the past about wanting to do another Dodge Magnum and creating a car to use the Barracuda name. Mark Fields has been a champion not only of keeping Lincoln (when then CEO Alan Mulally was aiming to shut it down) but a personal desire to see a return of some of Ford's historic nameplates (including Thunderbird). But when you're running a business, personal desires and being a fan of things doesn't always allow that to happen.

Mark Reuss never did get his Holden Ute based El Camino.

Having car guys in charge of car companies makes better cars, but it's always a whole lot more than personal views that gets certain cars made.

Yeshsh...I see...

(NOTE TO SELF: When lease is up in 2018, lease SOMETHING ELSE...ANYthing else!)

I mean unless they make a separate Grand National (read: RWD/AWD)! At least the current Regal has decent proportions! HELL, I could get a 2016 MALIBU and probably do better than THAT!!!!

I know, I know...it's a SPY shot with LOTS of camouflage but you CAN'T hide the HIDEOUS looking proportions with CAMOUFLAGE!

I would be very surprised if that Hatch version actually makes it into the US Buick line up. 4 door Hatches and Sedans with Fastbacks like this have been notoriously unpopular in the US. A sedan with a bit of a notch and traditional truck lid would do much better. The Opel/Vauxhall insignia will no doubt be offered with both as it is with the current model. I was hoping the new Regal would have bit more inspiration the Avenir show car.

Remember these? 1978 Buick Century

This Buick Century and the Oldsmobile Salon cousin did not sell well and GM quickly redesigned them with the more traditional Notch back sedan profile for 1980.

My Dad was one of the few buyers of that fastback. He really wanted a Regal, which sold like hotcakes, but he couldn't rationalize a coupe with 3 kids. He ended up driving it to work, so the back seat was only used a handful of times.

The fixed rear door glass didn't help sales either.

I really like how the greenhouse is opened up with the hood line to windshield and side windows alignment . Going to a hatch back for this model takes guts and a vision . Also introducing a wagon , WOW......This represents , to me , some serious but FUN thinking outside the box , congratulations Buick , my favorite GM division !!:drive:
