By James M. Amend - WardsAuto.com, May 28, 2010

SAN DIEGO, CA – Buick Marketing Manager Roger McCormack says dealers have delivered more than 70 units of the new-for-’11 Regal sports sedan since sales began some two weeks ago, and he expects inventories to begin swelling by the end of June.

McCormack says Regal inventories should reach between 4,000 and 5,000 units by the end of June. Buick presently has 600 units on the ground in the U.S. but some 2,050 dealers to feed.

The cars are arriving in batches of 500 to 1,000, depending upon the vessel, to Newark, NJ; Brunswick, GA; and Port of Hueneme, CA.

GM decided to initially build the Opel Insignia-based Regal in Russelsheim, Germany, before starting production next year in Oshawa, ON, Canada. The move allows the auto maker to launch the car quickly, given the Regal’s future was on-again, off-again as GM went through bankruptcy last year.

The first batches from Germany will be restricted to models with GM’s 182-hp 2.4L 4-cyl. engine with gasoline direct-injection, a 2010 Ward’s 10 Best Engines winner in the Chevy Equinox cross/utility vehicle.

Shipments of models with a more spirited 220-hp 2.0L turbocharged 4-cyl. GDI motor are expected to arrive in the third quarter. Both engines are mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, although the turbo gets a 6-speed manual in the fourth quarter.

McCormack expects the naturally aspirated engine to command 60% of Regal sales.

The Regal GS, which Buick revealed at the Detroit auto show earlier this year with a 2.0L, 225-hp turbo engine making a whopping 295 lb.-ft. (400 Nm) of torque, arrives next year.

The Regal marks an important addition to Buick’s portfolio. The LaCrosse, Lucerne and Enclave large CUV cover just 11% of the market for Buick, Ward’s data shows, but the Regal will push the brand to a 40% footprint.

The addition of a small CUV and compact car in the coming years will give Buick more than 50% coverage.

The Regal also provides the brand its first legitimate shot at building a “Buick garage,” McCormack says.

“An owner could have an Enclave as the vehicle he uses for the family and a Regal for commuting to work or taking his wife to dinner,” McCormack offers.

In a promising sign for the Regal, the first unit sold earlier this month was snapped up by a 44-year-old male manufacturing executive in suburban Chicago who also shopped a Toyota Camry and Audi A4 – exactly the customer Buick seeks for the car.

Even better, sources tell Ward’s the buyer paid $1,500 over sticker to get his hands on the Regal.

Great news for GM :D ... Even if 1,500 over list is a bit much. He must have REALLY wanted that Regal!

Man you guys are critical. Aren't early adopters usually paying more than people who wait months or years to purchase? Somehow I don't think this is isolated to just this particular car launch.

It's the free market principal, supply and demand.

Maybe this gentlemen values the driving experience of his new Regal more so than $1500 stuffed in his pocket. Or would we be happier if he got the Camry with $3k on the hood instead?

A consumer paying top value for a GM product, hell might have frozen over.

Yes because the only car worth paying over list for is a sports car with over 400 hp. If the person was happy to pay that much good for them. I do not think the redesigned LaCrosse has had 0% financing since being introduced. Let's hope the Regal enjoys as strong sales.

But the real message is that someone was willing to pay a premium for a Buick! When was the last time that that could be said for a Buick in the U.S.? While some may decry a person paying a premium for any car, let alone a Buick Regal-I personally would wait for a deal on the Regal, let alone "just" paying M.S.R.P.-I think the action speaks to a potential renaissance at Buick. And wouldn't that be great?

Yep, a fool and his/her money are easily parted. Anyone paying more than sticker for ANY mass market vehicle has more money than sense in my book.

So is this RWD/AWD?

I disagree with the 60% take rate for the naturally aspirated engine. I continue to think the 2.0L turbo will be the hot seller for this car.

Still can't believe there are idiots out there that do this...no one should ever pay more than GMS pricing for any GM vehicle...there are just too many ways to qualify for it.

Well that's enlightening.

People that post endlessly about NAV systems and can quote Motor Trend questioning somebody else's purchase

Why would the Regal sell well? Does it have anything distinctive about it? It's an inoffensive design, kinda cool looking, but what's the hook?

I just see this as being a disappointment within the year, sales-wise. It's just too safe.

How to make this thing standout: Add AWD across the range. Dress up that boring-ass interior. Bring on the wagon. Make the 2.0 liter turbo the standard engine.

I didn't realize they were coming to the port here in Brunswick. I haven't seen any yet....I'll check it out when I drive by the lots today

FWD Epsilon II short chassis.
****, Buick needs a RWD product badly to sparken up the brand. Or AWD. Something someone could take to a track on the weekend, then to work Monday morning. I see plenty of G's and GTO's at the track. Let's get a Buick out there!

I think I will wait for the 255hp GS instead. On a side not, I know the 2.0L Turbo engine has been approved for the Buick Verano (the upcoming Delta II), does anybody know when the performance model of that car will be released? I think I would rather have that setup in the smaller Verano rather then the Regal, although the looks of the Regal can't be beat.
