And it’s intriguing to see the cars the engineers brought for benchmarking: the inevitable VW Golf, a Toyota Auris and Ford’s Focus. The ensemble pretty much took over the whole car park. Hardly a subtle convoy...

Strip away the chequerboard disguise on this clutch of prototypes and you can see a practical five-door adorned with the latest Vauxhall/Opel styling cues. We hear it will get the scalloped side blade that gives the new Insignia such presence.

Key innovations inside include an electronic parking brake, incredibly thin, upright air vents and a split, twin digital read-out. But the acid test will be when we sit in the real ****pit in 2009.
And under the bonnet?

The new Vauxhall/Opel Astra will use the GM group’s new Delta platform. That means front and – on high-performance models – four-wheel drive, new suspension and a suit of new engines benefiting from direct-injection and the latest fuel-saving gizmos. Stop-start systems are likely.

Powerplants will stretch from a downsized 1.4 turbo to a rampant VXR model putting at least 250bhp to the tarmac through all four wheels.

Maybe the cammo is working, but I can't see the "scalloped side blade" like the Insignia.

Wow I did not realize that Delta was going to offer AWD
I hope they make an EVO or WRXSTi fighter of the Astra or the Cobalt.
GM needs to step into that arena b/c the younger generation is growing up with those cars on all the video games.....they love those cars.

lets get this straight befroe everyone gets it out of whack. This is the delta2 platform being lead engineered by GM Daewoo. Lets give credit where credit is due on this one. Germany is tuning the suspension and North America/Germany is doing the electronics.

I like the overall shape of the car--due to the camo it's impossible to discern fine details but it looks good so far. The dash looks pretty good--Even in that low-res cameraphone shot I can almost read the dials, and that's a good sign. I'm hoping that dial on the center console isn't some convoluted iDrive-like knockoff. I don't see a nav screen so it isn't likely but I can't come up with anything else it'd be for.

I like the look of the gauges. Unfortunately they won't be easy to clean if the dirt gets inside. I already have problems with my current Astra gauges which are a little less complicated.
