Chevrolet Camaro SS laps the 'Ring in... 8:20
Posted Jul 22nd 2008 5:30PM by Damon Lavrinc

In this automotive day and age, any vehicle that has even a trace amount of performance in its DNA has to make the rounds around the Nurburgring. The new Chevy Camaro SS isn't exempt. So after GM revealed the Camaro on Monday, one of the scribes at InsideLine ran up to an engineer to find out what kind of time the Camaro put down at the Nordschleife. According to Doug Houlihan, GM's chief engineer for global rear-wheel-drive vehicles, the Camaro SS ran the 'Ring in 8:20.

To put that into perspective, the recently released 2008 Cobalt SS did the deed in 8:22, along with the BMW E46 M3 and the last generation BMW M Coupe, followed by the Lotus Exige S and Porsche Cayman S at 8:25.

A little fine tuning the Cobalt SS could probably smoke the Camaro......very interesting. I would have thought for sure the Camaro would have been much more superior on cornering then the front drive Cobalt and I would have believed the Camaro with 422 hp would have won by a large margin on the long straights but with a win by only 2 seconds over the course of over 8 minutes the Cobalt is relatively comparable in performance to the 2010 Camaro. Weight definitely has to be a negative factor against the Camaro. The ZL1 Corvette did the course in 7:26 almost a minute quicker then the Camaro/Cobalt. Interesting numbers. Now we have to see what the Mustang/Hemi Challenger can do it in.

Pretty interesting. I have to say I love that 2.0 DI Turbo, I hope if they do put it in the Camaro they somehow put the Camaro on a diet so it will be potent there too.

With it only being 2 seconds faster than the Cobalt SS....is it a compliment to the Cobalt? Or a knock against the Camaro? Judging by the other cars in the time class, its a huge compliment to the Cobalt SS.
Has anyone ever seen any numbers for the SS/SC on the 'ring? I've wondered since the LNF SS was released really how much better the suspension is, since the performance in terms of accel. seems to be only marginally better.

I believe that I heard from Lutz, that the 2.0 turbo is only achieving a 2mpg improvement
over the V6. In my book, the V6 with 300+hp would be my pick hands down over
the 2.0 turbo, if I was deciding between the two. However, I'd go for the SS with the
potent LS3. It would make a great weekend car. I wouldn't really consider gas mileage
as a factor in purchasing what I truly desire, top line performance.

Sorry, either I was hallucinating or the thread was deleted. I cannot find it either, but I know I posted a reply to it? Oh well, Chevy now has 4 cars pretty high on that list, which is great.
I'm a chevy guy and competition is of real importance with this new Camaro. Dodge just announced it is offering a supercharged package for the 2009 challenger in November at SEMA and a special drag racing package for the street scene. Chevy better up the anti by next March when these Camaros hit the street or they will get lost in the dust.

Beating out the Exige and Cayman S is Awesome!
I agree. But you do need to look at track conditions (was it wet?) and the humidity. And possibly any other conditions that may affect it's times.

Impressive though.

Very impressive times if it can kee up with last gen M3.
But that Cobalt SS time is awesome, very impressive. I think it just goes to show you how well tuned the Cobalt SS is. It can keep up with 422hp Camaro SS's.

Well, the Cobalt SS is damn fast.

Remember that article where the Jag XF had a "trucklet" following it on the track? Couldn't shake it without turning off the Jag's traction control.... the trucklet turned out to be an HHR SS.

I think they're lucky it wasn't a Cobalt SS or they might've gotten passed...
