Let the Games Begin: Mercedes McLaren P8 aims for supercar playground in 2008

The SLR was just the first shot: Mercedes-Benz and McLaren are beyond planning stages for a mid-engine, V8-powered supercar with sights set on Ferrari’s 360 Modena and Ford’s GT. The project car—though only in its formative stage—has a dedicated group looking into its engineering, manufacturing, sales and marketing feasibility, and is codenamed P8. If given approval in the coming months, P8, which would slot between the robust SL65 AMG and the SLR McLaren, could be on the streets testing by late 2006 and in showrooms by late 2007.

The Cien would be supercar range of 400k, too high.

how much $$$ for the SLR? And could this car be built along with the ME412?
Hmm, the C class is average, the ML exudes shoddy build quality (yes, I know it's being replaced soon), VW is starting to field some credible luxury cars and SUV's, and BMW surpassed Mercedes in Asian sales (and will do so on a global scale come 2005/2006), to name a few of Mercedes' problems. The solution: build another low-volume, super-expensive exotic car. I'm a bit mystified; they seem to have more than their fair share of halo cars. Hey, since it's Mercedes, I say go for it!
Let Mercdes make it, nobody is going to buy that ugly POS.
And we should care, because why  ???.....I'd buy a Viper b4 this POS..and it won't B 2 long b4 we're looking @ 500hp Vette and CTS 4 way way less.
Funny to see an article discussing Mercedes having to build a new car just to take aim at Ferrari and Ford. Not something I thought I'd ever see happen, even though it is at the supercar level. Just amusing anyway.
<_< That artist's redering speaks way to much Cadillac Cien ...(but Germany needs to know America is flattered anyway) :D
Somebody wake me when MB does something exciting.

*yawn*

haha! good point! guess mercedes won't humble itself enough to admit there's something wrong. they'll just hope mr. & mrs. mercedes driver will be happy enough watching a mercedes supercar zoom by the tow truck hooking up their C-class sedan.
Of curse, those look only like prelliminary drawings, but...I like it!
it's better than the nonsense slr
Needs gullwings. You know, like the GTO needs a bunch a scoops, like Buicks need portholes, Impalas need three taillights, and Mustangs need to look like old Mustangs.

Er... I think his point was that Mercedes already HAS a supercar. They're a company that has traditionally had outstanding overall quality, but it's now faltering.

Ford, on the other hand, is well on the way to having all its vehicles have oustanding build quality. Building the GT supercar was a simple case of needing a halo car for the company.

The SSR is a frivolous halo car as well, but it will get attention.

Dodge building the Viper when it first did turned a lot of things around for the company. It got people to at least come into showrooms, which is the entire point of a halo car.

When the ZL1 comes out, is that a sign that all else has failed for GM? Or will, since it's GM, be a sign that they are king of the hill?

Eagerly awaiting your reply...

You know... something with that much power really doesn't need a seven speed automatic... 5 or 6 at the most... and where is the manual tranny? <_<

GM has several "halo" cars. The also have lots of new product. Cant say that about ford who seem to be more worried on performance then product.

Ford has quite a bit of new product on the market or coming for 05 model year. If you exclude overlaps between divisions (ie. SUVs with only minimal changes), how many new vehicles does GM actually have coming out compared with Ford?

You argued that Mercedes doesn't need a second halo car, yet now you claim that GM has several halo cars? What exactly is the point you're trying to make here? If it's just "Mercedes sucks, GM rules!" please say so now so I can stop wasting my time here.
GM as a corporation has several "halo" vehicles, but on a division-by-division basis each only has one halo vehicle. Creating two vehicles for such low volume small niche markets that compete directly seems very stupid. IMO Mercedes would benefit more if it were to market such a super car under the newly created Maybach moniker to further solidify it as a producer of ultra-luxary vehicles and to widen it's product base.
