2008/2009 Malibu OnStar Nav Functionality?

I have heard that there are different levels of functionality depending on the car model. Does the new Malibu support all the possible Turn By Turn nav functions?

For instance, in the PDF file I found online, it says:

“Store Route Destination” and “Plan Route”- Some vehicles allow
you to store destinations. You can store your last route or you can store
a current destination by giving the command, “Store destination.”
The system then asks you to assign a name tag. Now, any time you
want to get directions to that destination, give the command, “Plan
route”. The system will ask you for the name tag. Say the destination
name tag you stored. The system will automatically create a route for
you to that destination. You do not connect to an OnStar Advisor, it’s
all done automatically. Directions should start within a minute. You
can store up to 30 name tags. Not every vehicle has this feature. If the
“Store destination” response was “Please say the entire number
to store”, that means you do not have this feature.
Is the 2008 Malibu one of the vehicles that has this feature?
Does the Malibu display arrows showing the direction of the next turn?

One feature that looks like it would be annoying is the fact that it doesn't look like it will automatically reroute you if you miss a turn or purposely bypass one of the suggested turns (due to construction, traffic jam or any other reason). It will prompt you and ask if you want to be rerouted:

If your
directions take you to a road you are not able to turn on, continue
driving and wait until the system recognizes that you missed the turn
and are off the planned route. Respond to the “Do you need direc-
tions to get back on route?” message by saying “Yes.” OnStar
Turn-by-Turn Navigation may be able to give you an alternate route.
If turns are close together, you will keep missing turns because of this long delay before it does anything due to the prompt, then waiting for your response, then reacting to your response.
You may have to find someplace to park and wait for it to get caught up after completing all those steps.
Is there anyway to set it to quickly reroute without prompting (like a normal car or portable nav system would)?

Will they improve anything with this on 2009s? There might be some updates since it Malibu gets bluetooth for 2009 and they might change the OnStar hardware for that.

Malibu comes standard with OnStar Turn by Turn. There are few vehicles that don't offer it at this point (Aveo, Cobalt, etc).

Yes. I understand that, but some features of the Turn By Turn itself are only available on some of the car models that have Turn By Turn. That's what I was asking about.
Does the Malibu have every possible feature of Turn By Turn?
Specifically, the feature of saving routes with name tags as I posted in the original message above.
GM should just offer the normal tahoe navigation on this Malibu instead of this go it alone type of system that people will soon discard

I believe such features are exclusive to Cadillac at the moment.

There are some advantages to Turn By Turn such as calling in addresses while driving. I have heard the nav system in the Tahoe locks you or a passenger out of controlling it or entering destinations while the vehicle is in motion.

The main disadvantages I see for the OnStar Turn By Turn seem to be delayed rerouting of missed turns, not being able to access it at all if you are out of the Verizon wireless coverage area and possibly waiting on hold in a phone queue to get a live operator to enter the destinations for you.

Malibu does not. I tried this on my Aura and it was a no go. Same hardware in both cars.

I heard about an upgrade for next year from my rep, I'll ask next time I see him.

I've only used my Turn by Turn once, but I did notice that the radio display showed the name of the street and I THINK how many miles before the next turn. There might be more info, but I had just picked up the car, so I was paying more attention to driving then to the radio read out

NOPE! Not true. There was a shortcut that I knew instead of what the nav was telling me. As soon as I turned down the shortcut, the nav came on and updated my route! NO operator came on.

If I use it more, I'll let you know how it works exactly. I could always ask for directions to someplace that I know to test it. Stay tuned.

Almost forgot- I don't THINK I can store directions like telephone numbers. At least the OnStar advisor never asked me if I wanted to or told me that I could. Then again, with customer service what it is these days, I would not depend on that as a definite yes or no!

I didn't mean a live operator would come on. It's a recorded prompt you have to deal with before getting rerouted. This is from the OnStar documentation. I have copied it below.

Because the navigation system uses street map information that does not include all trafic restrictions or the latest road changes, it may
suggest using a road that is closed for construction or a turn that
is prohibited by signs at the intersection. Because the system uses limited information, you must always evaluate whether following the system’s directions are safe and legal for the current conditions. If your directions take you to a road you are not able to turn on, continue driving and wait until the system recognizes that you missed the turn and are off the planned route.

Respond to the “Do you need directions to get back on route?” message by saying “Yes.” OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation may be able to give you an alternate route.

If the turn instructions continue to direct you to a closed road, push the OnStar button and ask the Advisor to find an alternate route for you.
on our 07 Impala-
were using Turn by Turn.
yes the radio will show arrows of upcoming turns. right below the arrow- it displays a distance (it decreases as you drive) so if need be- you know how far ahead the turn is. as you approach youll get an audible message- telling you to make the turn up ahead- and you see the amount of distance left, as you come to the point where youre supposed to be making the turn- you get a BEEP BEEP- that lets you know that at that point you were supposed to make the turn.
If you miss the turn- it takes seconds to reroute.....
Now I believe Ive heard it say- youve left the preplanned route- would you like directions to get back on Route? AND ive also had it automatically update the route and get me going back to the destination... (It may be the way the route was setup- I dont know- I may have to test it).
You can also hit a button on the radio- and it will preview your upcoming turn- ot your entire route.
As for the extra features- mentioned above- I dont know.... not something I remember right now.
BUT- we are BETA TESTING the ONSTAR Mapquest feature.
We received email and asked us if we wanted to test... I said yes.
using my email acct associated with Onstar and a 4 digit code...
I log onto a ONSTAR/Mapquest web site. I enter the destination and click on SEND TO ONSTAR. where I enter my email, code, and a NAME TAG for the destination.
when you click on the PHONE button on the mirror- it says ONSTAR Ready, I say "VIRTUAL ADVISOR" and it then tells me I have new destinations. I can have it list the destinations, or I say the name tag- it then begins to upload the drivinf directions.
since it has the location where going to... it doesnt matter where you are. thats where directions start from.
This onstar feature is great.....
My significant other- will sometimes- have to drive somewhere within the next 2 hrs.
all she simply does- is email me the locations.(since im behind a computer all day)
I log on- and in about 3 minutes- I have all her locations uploaded. she simply gets in her car and uses Virtual advisor.
Her jobsite doesnt allow web usage... thats why she just emails me the addresses.
Her other option is to call the operator- which he does. But I can easily upload the directions.
This onstar mapquest feature- I love it. Ive uploaded directiosn to restaurants etc- while im planning the evenings entertainment etc....
I emailed onstar- its a feature that will be available to Turn by Turn subscribers pretty soon.

I remember someone saying there are minor changes between different car models and I think they said the 2008 Malibu is one of the cars that doesn't display the arrows even though your 2007 Impala does.
interesting.
on the impala. its the radios display...
isnt the Malibu using the same radios?
