Killer.

As expected.

I can't wait for SER specs.

Am I the only one thinking that Nissan is holding back on this new gen VQ engine? No DI yet. I bet they're waiting just a bit to see what Honda has up their sleeve next year with the Accord, at which time you'll see a power bump.

I was thinking the VQ would come out stronger than it did, but you are probably right about waiting for Honda.

Mind you, I only say what I said because the new VQ makes over 300HP in the new G35 without any advanced features like DI either.

I wonder if the strategy for Infiniti is to come out with a NISMO spec for an M3 killer.

I don't think Ford will be topping the VQ

It's what they did last time, but alot of Honda people are saying the Accord will recieve about 250HP. It's coming from a new engine that is supposed to be a DOHC and be tricked out with various technologies. It's supposed to have a feature similar to that of valvetronic but cheaper to build. And may even have DI like some Honda 4 cylinders have in japan already (Honda stream).

In two years or less, our bread and butter cars will have a base of 300 hp..thats just scary. It also seems like over kill since most people never begin to tap into that power.

The top of the line car sees a loss of ten horsepower, but the midsize car gets a big boost. Odd. But I still adore both cars.

the Maxima is still on the old FFL platform... which was already having torque steer issues. so since the altima on the new platform was gonna leapfrog it in so many ways anyway, they dropped the Max's hp to make it handle better (in theory). the 2002 Altima was similarly better than the 2002-2003 Maxima before it got upgraded in 04.

by 2009 there'll be a ground up redo of the maxima, probably w/ AWD and a 275-300hp VQ under the hood. and yeah, the VQ's got all kinds of back up hp... 306 w/out DI (probably as good as Nissan brand will get anytime soon) and probably 315-320 w/DI based on GM's DI gains. plus rumors of a bigger 3.7L engine for Infiniti.

Unless they make the next gen Maxima a true fullsize, doesn't it become redundant?

MF
It actually kind of was in 2002-2003. That was the year the Altima got redesigned and it was actually a little bit bigger than the Maxima. Therefore, Nissan pushed the Maxima upmarket with the 255 horsepower motor, HID headlamps, revised styling, and more luxury features. This year, what Nissan is doing is a little different, since the car is already upmarket, they are jsut doing a mid-cycle change.

Camry has 268hp
Altima now has 270hp
Other vehicles in this class i think have anywhere between 263-270.
Poor GM though, i think they're stuck at around ~250+ right now. CTS is at 255 (well it IS getting updated so that doesnt matter anymore) and the Aura is at 252 and its the newest face on the block right now.
Honda's also at around 250 but like GM they'll likely boost output to remain competitive.

270 just looks better than the 26x numbers because its a higher number (7 vs 6), and its a round number.

I think the next altima is ugly. So ugly, the powertrain can't win me over.
Sucks for you.

the weight of the car impresses me the most imo

mileage is kinda dissapointing though...
Best in class 4-cylinder (with the most powerful stats) MPG is disappointing...ok.

I just hope the new platform can put that power down without the steering feel of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.
