I have a 2004 2WD Suburban (5.3 T code engine) with low mileage. It does not start on the first crank. I checked to see if the fuel pump turned on when the ignition switch was turned to the "on" position, and it does not. This check was done by listening carefully to the fuel pump while someone else worked the ignition key (not a fuel pressure check). The fuel pump turns on during the second crank, and the engine fires right up. Also, the engine will start on the first crank if it was recently turned off (plenty of fuel pressure?).

If this probelm is caused by the fuel pump not getting the "on" signal during the first crank, where do I start troubleshooting? I understand that the 2004engine/electricals are far more complex than my 1993 2WD Suburban (which has been extremely reliable during its first 185,000 miles).
