General Motors Futurliner #10
By Myles Kornblatt

Buses rarely get this much attention without carrying a rock band. But in the case of General Motors’ Futurliner, these behemoths were already off the road before the Rolling Stones even picked up a guitar.

Back in the 40s American auto companies had money to burn, and none were larger than GM. So when it came time to update their traveling road show, GM built 12 ultra modern transport buses called “Futurliners.” These custom machines were specifically built for GM’s Parade of Progress and were sent across the country promoting new technology that went well beyond transportation......

We were able to get an up-close look at Futurliner #10, as it will spend this weekend featured at the Iola Old Car Show in Iola, WI. It recently completed a full restoration by a volunteer crew, and it is considered to be the most accurate example of the nine known remaining buses. It belongs to National Automotive and Truck Museum of the United States. The museum occasionally lets the Futurliner out on tour to share memories and educate the public. During the Iola Car Show, they took the car out of temporary storage and offered us a ride.....

The Futurliner looks like it was lifted from a comic book. Its extra tall 11’7” stance and super-slick lines are suitable transportation for a super hero. The bright gold, chrome, and red canvassing the exterior shows the Futurliner is proud to be extravagant. It is a reminder of a time when the automotive companies were kings, and they were benevolent to their subjects.

.......Inside, the cab is a sea of green cloth and naugahyde. Fashionable in its day, it now just fits with the original retro look. The interior’s style is secondary however because the large glass greenhouse covers most of the inside. GM included air conditioning when the Futurliners were redesigned in the 50s -- a welcomed addition to the sun exposed passenger area.....

......The seating puts the driver in the middle of the cab, with two passengers sitting directly behind on either side. It is almost like a slightly roomier version of a McLaren F1, and this is the only way the Futurliner will ever be compared to a sports car.....

.....Still, Howard Sullivan, a volunteer with this Futurliner’s tour was proud to announce: “#10 holds the record for the fastest Futurliner lap at Charlotte Motor Speedway.” He then confessed it also held the record for the slowest lap, as #10 is the only one to ever take to the track.....

I saw one of these sell at the Barrett Jackson while watching on TV. I think it was two or three years ago. I can't remember what the price was but it was quite a bit.

This thing really looks like a beast and seems to be really impressive. I would love to see one in person.

I am thinking it had dual front wheels as they would not be able to go to anything more than 2 axles withoug cutting into the display area, so maybe a simple way around a problem.. back in the day they did that :)

I don't kno if it broke a record, but the owner was hoping to get $600,000 and it sold for $4,000,000.
Ahh the stupid money days of the Barrett Jackson auctions... fun to watch... might take another 30 or 40 years before some of those cars get up to the same price levels :eek::eek:

WOW!

It looks like the side could open up to reveal one of those 50s style American Milk Bars (Drug shop?) or Diners....

The amazing transforming, travelling Diner.....

I saw this amazing beauty at the Cord Museum in Auburn, IN last fall. Absolutely amazing. At one point they had 12 of these things running around in a caravan going from town to town across the country showing off all the cool new things that will be in your home of Parade of Progress (not just cars btw - at that time GM had their hands in everything!) ... both sides of the truck open and the middle of the trucks becomes a giant display booth with a huge light that elevated out of the top to light the entire display at night.

very cool stuff

I have seen one of these before on the road here in Ottawa! A couple years ago, 2003 maybe? But it was being used by Fido to promote their Cell phones. I did a bit of research just now, and it turns out that particular one was restored and was the one that sold a Barett-Jackson a few years back! Cool!

I heard this one was stored in my hometown for sometime before being restored.

my parents home had a GM-frigidaire fridge and a slide out oven think from the 60's (the cook top slid out of the front of the double oven like this one

The picture you posted shows a similar Tappan 400, not a Frigidaire Flair range. The Frigidaire Flair ranges have vertical opening doors.

I have a Frigidaire 40" Custom Imperial Flair dual oven range with a slide out cook top from 1962 and Frigidaire Imperial Frost Proof bottom freezer refrigerators from 1963 and 1964. I really like them!

^^^ That's really cool don't let go of it if it works. A lot of people me included would love to have a fabulous 50's kitchen complete with period fittings.
Maybe you'd appreciate my kitchen, too...

I got to climb inside one of those at the Flint Auto Fair a couple years ago. Massive until you get to the drivers seat, then it looks small. Has to be very interesting to drive for sure.

must be an interesting drive i happened to see the Barret Jackson auction of the one talked about a few posts ago. It must have been a unique sight back then and even now it still has a unique flair to it. Hopefully GM will use the futurliner to perhaps help promote the Chevy Volt (since it is a futuristic product)

I'm just really happy at all the hits this thread has gotten. I found it to be a very interesting and entertaining find, and I didn't want to bury it in the discussion forum, even if it isn't exactly "news."

I love the '50's take on the "future," especially 1950's robots, and this just fits right in.
