X-ray Research May Open Door to Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Most electric cars, from the Tesla Model S to the Nissan Leaf, run on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries – a pricey technology that accounts for more than half of the vehicle’s total cost. One promising alternative is the lithium-sulfur battery, which can theoretically store five times more energy at a much lower cost...

This could end up being a huge breakthrough for EV's.

I keep reading different "if only we can" articles on different technologies. Hopefully one of these will pan out!

I've heard speculation that the IC engine is not dead.

I guess in some ways its a good thing even if it doesnt pan out, at least they are finding new things to look at, the big worry will be if they ever say, we have nothing else to look at.

Exactly - breakthroughs are built on failures. Without the spirit of trying there will be no breakthrough!

My favorite is our own scientists at the National Ignition Facility (Lawrence Livermore) - super high tech and getting close to producing more power than they put in. If the USA can develop practical fusion energy then our whole world will change!

Re: X-ray Research May Open Door to Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The NIF uses very high power lasers and inertia to fuse Hydrogen. It has yet to reach even Fusion.

But the ITER tokamak building in France, is merely up-sizing to commercial sized power plants, and was expected to solve a few remaining plasma physics containment issues like Edge stability problems, that quench the plasma. In the long time it took to get international cooperation to fund and build ITER, and remove the funding issue from Democrat political hacks in America, that killed it once, other fusion sites around the world have piecemeal solved the few remaining plasma stability issues, that ITER was originally meant to solve. ITER remains as a engineering design problem, solving the engineering problems of designing a commercial Fusion power plant.

ITER was designed to, and will produce Fusion, with a net gain of at least 10 to 1, generating ten times the power out, as the amount of power needed to initiate the Fusion reaction. Break-even is a forgone conclusion, approached by previous smaller facilities like MAST, momentarily. Furthermore it will do it for hours on end, proving it is possible to do it essentially continuously.

So confident are the ITER scientists and engineers that they want to start designing and building the first really commercial Fusion power plant, in only a few years, (2017), which is even before the ITER facility is fully constructed!

The Interregnum of questions about cheap and always available power, is drawing to a close. All the leftist talk of "vanishing resources", "Limits" and "Rationing" administered and regulated by themselves, are just as we suspected, pure hokum; and excuses to reach for money and power by these otherwise rather useless ciphers and waste of food and air.

"Previous experiments also showed the formation of dilithium sulfide (Li2S) crystals during the discharge phase."

A potential transportation power source containing dilithium crystals. Never thought I'd see the day.
