Report: House votes 'overwhelmingly' to block E15 fuel

According to The Detroit News, the U.S. House of Representatives has voted to block the Environmental Protection Agency from moving toward a higher blend of ethanol in America's gasoline. Representatives voted 286-135 against allowing the EPA to issue a waiver that would allow gas stations to sell E15. Currently, fueling stations are only allowed to sell E10, which contains up to 10 percent of the biofuel. The new legislation would allow a 50-percent increase in the amount of ethanol sold in each gallon of gasoline. Representative John Sullivan (R-Oklahoma) attached an amendment to the bill to provide funding for the U.S. government through September, effectively killing the legislation.

While The Renewable Fuels Association criticized the decision to stop the E15 waiver, several groups were thoroughly against the increase in ethanol. Those include everyone from the Specialty Equipment Market Association to the American Bakers Association.

The EPA has already approved E15 for vehicles made after 2001, but some groups worry that a higher blend across the board could wind up corroding older engines. Meanwhile, proponents of the increase claim that larger ethanol quantities will help lower America's dependence on foreign oil.

Thank god, E10 is bad enough. If you want more Ethanol in your fuel buy E85.

EPA is out of control. They should have gone to congress first before making their own law.

I don't like how they have started cutting gasoline with ethanol -- E10 is bad enough

Don't underestimate the power of the corn lobby. Big Corn has obviously bought off enough people on the inside.

My lawn mowers, snow blowers, trimmers, and other power equipment all say THANK YOU!!

Both of my cars would have been ok (albeit they'd have suffered mileage-wise) but all my other small engine equipment already has enough problems dealing with E10. I would be rebuilding carburetors and replacing seals left and right if they went to E15.

Good. It's much better to leave these things up to the will of the people then a sound energy policy. Clearly a representative from Oaklahoma know's whats better then the DEP. Frankly, I don't even get why we protect the enviornment.... let along have a whole department. Just saying.

To celebrate I will pouring one quart of pure Texas crude directly into a local stream. Let's see the DEP do jack about that.

    P.S. Sarcastic.

Why force more ethenol in gas when they can just sell 10% in more states to reach their goals?

EPA, one more great place for some budget-cutting.

Not the EPA's problem. You must adjust to HAL's instructions.

What we need is more pumps with real gas. The nearest station with 100% gas premium is 50 miles away from me.

We get so much such crap added to our fuel in California, my newer vehicles need and have custom PCM calibrations to deal with all of the detonation. Our engines run excessively lean because of the ethanol and other additives.

In this case it isn't really "Big Environment" but rather "Big Corn" which is causing a real problem. The corn lobby and the corn ethanol guys will do whatever it takes to increase their funding and their profits. They could care less about the environmental issues related to increasing corn yields for ethanol production. They also don't care about the true cost of ethanol production from corn because it is heavily subsidized and all they care about is making a profit for themselves.

The major problem with E10 and E15 is/would be the gasoline being diluted by water as well by some evil refiners/service station operators...

No complaintas from me here. Ethanol and Boat engines are a recipe for disaster. If a tad little bit of water leaks into the fuel tank, the Ethanol will wreak havoc and cause your engine to pretty much just die. I have been stranded out in Saginaw Bay (the part of the Great Lakes that gives michigan it's "thumb" in its mitten shape) twice. Both times were due to e10 gas, which I bought from a Marina (which usually charges at least a $1 mark up per gallon), that was NOT supposed to be blended gas.

Ethanol is good for the corn growers, but as for me, all blended gas does is ruin engines and decrease fuel economy!
