The Killing of Saturn will Kill 25% of Gm's Hybrid sales.

When Saturn gets the axe later this year, GM will face another conundrum added to its long list: A possible 25% reduction in hybrid vehicle sales.

The automaker's youngest division was only surpassed by Chevrolet last year in hybrid vehicle sales, moving 5,838 hybrids from its dealer lots. Saturn currently offers the Vue Hybrid as well as the Aura Hybrid sedan.

A Two Mode Vue was due out this summer, but has inevitably been cancelled. The same can be said of the crossover's plug-in hybrid derivative.

GM North American sales chief Mark LaNeve mentioned to Automotive News that Saturn's hybrid technology could be implemented throughout the future GM family.

"Any of the four core brands could get our technology," LaNeve said. "There's not a hybrid in Saturn that is exclusive to Saturn. Nothing changes there, unless someone who buys Saturn says they want us to continue building hybrids for this brand and we agree to do it."

Killing Saturn will bring GM's fleetwide MPG average down. Not good for CAFE.

That's really too bad. I was looking forward to the two-mode. I wonder if GM debuted the Vue 2-M knowing it was never gonna go into production.

I agree with Fenwick about the Terrain and Nox hybrids. The Terrain already has a grille that belongs on an EV/Hybrid anyway.

That's what I am thinking. You really can't trust GM these days. A VOLT has never been made. All the show cars have been Cruze's with a shell over it.

Don't worry...all those buyers will flock to Chevy.

Good gravy... another article that assumes that GM will divest itself of the market and technologies associated with logos.

This is talking about the immediate. In the future, GM will make it up, but when Saturn is gone, 25% of GM hybrid sales go too.

Well we know the Volt is going to be made. We know the Volt is based on the Cruze, so a Cruze fitted wth the Volt's EV powertrain isn't making me lose trust in GM. We know the Volt is still in pre-production stages, but a production version is coming in a few months.

I was mainly making my point based on assuming it was their plan to terminate Saturn anyway prior to the Vue 2-Mode's debut.

I know it will be made, but I was just proving a point that didn't work well in proving my point. That makes no sense, but I really don't care.

Killing Pontiac and Saturn will also kill a whack of market share also unless GM does a very good job to capture owners and prospective buyers with loyalty certificates.

    It's all a disaster!!!!!!!

I'm not one for badge engineering at all, but I think a smart move would be for this summer, to put a Buick badge on the Vue and sell it as a Buick as soon as the 2010 model year hits, including the hybrid version.

I thought all the Pontiac and Saturn buyers would automatically go to other GM brands...at least that is what I have been told numerous times here.

Uh... no they won't. Smart money says that the majority will go to Honda or Toyota. If they wanted a Chevy, they would have gone to a Chevy dealer to begin with. Unfortunately, when it comes to small cars, Chevrolet equals negative brand equity. Young buyers in particular are going to other makes.

That was supposed to be a joke...that's why I put the in there.

I am one of those that won't automatically be going to Chevy. (I know I currently own a Chevy...I'm working on getting rid of it.)
