Japan, Inc. coordinates efforts to take lead in Li-Ion race

The impact of the Volt continues to grow...

The Nikkei reports that four Japanese industrial organizations, together comprising more than 100 affiliated firms, will ally this year to create new safety standards and testing requirements for all lithium-ion batteries sold in Japan....

With production-stage flaws having been cited, the associations saw a need for member firms to share defect information as well as product improvement expertise in order to address the problem.

With all due respect, this has less to do with the Volt than it does with all of the cellphone and laptop batteries exploding and malfunctioning.

(I'd certainly like the reason to be GM kickin' Japan's #$% with the Volt, too, but this is really not about the auto industry)

Yeah, Nokia issued a warning recently for another 46 million phones out there with suspect batteries sourced from Matsushida.

Another insightful post - quit looking at asians as if they are like westerners, they are not. Different culture, different goals. We better wake up soon...

we have a lil ole law called anti-trust. Japan leads the world in batteries and aint sharing that. We are not going to wake up, period, it has been some 40 years now of this behavior.
