Five Canceled Electric Car Concepts: Lessons Learned

One reason that green car fans are so excited about the upcoming Nissan LEAF, Chevy Volt, Mitsubishi i-MiEV, and Ford Focus Electric is that these cars are definitely, absolutely and positively going to be produced and sold in the United States.

It’s easy enough for a car company to write up a press release, push an exciting electric-drive concept car to an auto show platform, and strike up the music. In the process, hopes are raised—only to be dashed with the swipe of an auto executive’s hand.

Takeaway: No matter what anybody says, be skeptical until you see a confirmed launch date and price—and multiple reviewers have taken a test drive of a production model, not a concept or test prototype.

Wow, that renewed the sting of learning that the Converj had been cancelled. Most beautiful Cadillac in many years for my tastes.....maybe at least they will produce the BODY for an ICE-powered Cadillac, like the next-gen CTS.

Canceling the Saturn Vue Plug-In wholesale was a BAD, BAD idea. They should have thrown the tech into the 2010 Equinox.

Or flip it over to Buick if they can get a baby Enclave going, but that's another thing for another day.

Well I think that GM would have been better off moving it DOWN market though, not up. Remember Saturn sat above Chevy. I think that it would've fit better as a Chevy, bringing Plug-In hybrids to MAINSTREAM vehicles. It's all about public perception. Make it affordable, and although they may not buy the Plug-In, they may buy another GM car. The Prius works the same way for Toyota.

And I think a Baby Enclave needs to come when Lambda II comes out. It would be epic for Buick's sales.

The Ford Magna deal will fall through, and the Chryslers were obvious non starters.

That's an exciting range of vehicles (looking at the 25).

I hope the rest can hang on.

2/5 are from GM. If you add in the PR debacle that was the EV1, it's no wonder why so many people still think that the Volt will not be produced. All the more reason to get that thing out on time.

I have been waiting for a good priced rear drive car since 97!! Yes, I KNOW I can buy a German car but I want an American car!! I drove the 2010 Cadillac CTS for a couple weeks and fell in love with it, but can't afford it, how do you think I can afford a Electric for for 50k that won't go 150 miles?

Too bad 2/5 of them were GM cars. The Converj was a beautiful car, too bad it isn't seeing production.

All this talk of plug in hybrids reminds me, I saw a plug in hybrid Escape sitting in a driveway on a dirt road south of Barryton, MI this weekend. We assumed it was a Ford employees summer cabin or something. Not something you expect to see around there.

The G8 was out for a few years. After discounts, they sold new for under 25k. That's about as affordable as you can get. 300C, Charger and Challenger are still available as are the Mustang and Camaro.

Also, used 2008 CTSes are popping up around here for around $20k. Why not get one of those?

redimpss5, in addition to the G8, there was also the shortlived GTO.

Are you hoping for a Cobalt or Malibu priced RWD car?

i hope they sells lots and lots of electric vehicles because that will mean there will be a surplus of gasoline which means the price will come down, supply and demand and i can keep driving my high performance gasoline powered cars for less. GO ELECTRICS!!!!

I agree those are all good options, but I think it's a bit of a stretch to call the G8 "American".
