Biofuel crops may raise greenhouse gas emissions, scientist says

"Cambridge, England - A new study by Nobel Prize-winning chemist Paul Crutzen suggests that growing and burning biofuel crops may actually raise greenhouse gas emissions, rather than lower them.

The study says that growing some of the most commonly-used biofuel crops release around twice the amount of the potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide than previously thought. The amount of nitrous oxide - N2O, also known as "laughing gas" - could wipe out any benefits from not using fossil fuels, and probably contribute to global warming."

Biofuels may be carbon neutral but they are not NxOx neutral.

    http://www.canadiandriver.com/news/070924-1.htm

The problem is not just fertilizer for crops. But when you burn any fuel it produces NxOx emissions as well. These too are considered green house gas emissions. Also NxOx's are very bad for the ozone layer.

Well that does it. I'm just going to continue paying $3+/gal for gasoline. If it goes higher, who cares. Nuts to any alternatives...

Well I still think electric or fuel cell will still be the answer.

My car comes off lease in 2011 perfect time for a Volt.

For most people, sure, but I'm sure we'll hear more about how that'll kill the environment too.

In case you haven't been listening to Algore, the status quo is unacceptable, too. No gasoline, no biofuels, and I cannot begin to tell you what batteries do to the environment. Algore has shown us the way: the only environmentally acceptable way to travel is by private jet.

Actually the new L-Ion batteries are supposed to be recyclable so there impact on the enviroment should be relatively small.

haha Ofcourse that'll solve the traffic problems aswell! That means more people will move close to an airport and housing will get cheaper in the big cities. More people will move back in to the cities and close enough to work to walk or ride a bicycle. Problem solved!

As long as the bio-fuel is home grown and doesn't send our money to the middle east then I'm much happier even if there is no benefit to the environment. I think the electric car is a better answer and I can't wait to buy a Volt. We need to produce more clean energy for our electric generation.

If only we all could afford a private jet to fly around in the environment would be so much better!

Have you seen the run off from a Chilean lithium mine? Not pretty, my friend. Or so I am told. No, I am afraid that the prolitariate will just have to learn to do without personal transit.

Well just because lithium isn't mined clean in Chile doesn't mean that it can't be mined cleanly.

There are many steps to take to be 100% environmentaly sustainable. We will just have to take them one at a time.

The money still goes to the middle east if you use corn based ethanol. The energy yield on corn ethanol is just 1.3:1. So 1 unit of energy in the form of diesel and natural gas becomes 1.3 units of energy in the form of ethanol. And who has the largest reserves of natural gas and crude?

Anybody who thinks corn based ethanol is home grown is deluding themselves.

Things will change when cellulastic ethanol comes along.

Actually I often think reports like this are skewed to try to curtail the move to renewable fuel. You can pay for the data you want and to get the results you like. I would have to see someone repeat his study so I will not take it at face value because one person said so.

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles give off water vapor as emissions, the leading cause of global warming. Personally I'd rather be giving off something that is somewhat helpful to the environment like CO2 instead of stuff like N2O and super heated H2O which mostly has a detrimental effect on the environment.
