The First of GMs All-New Pickups Posts a 20 Percent Q1 Gain

DETROIT General Motors (NYSE: GM) announced today that it delivered 665,840 vehicles in the first quarter of 2019, with a selling mix of trucks, SUVs and crossovers above 80 percent. GMs focus on these vibrant segments helped it earn the highest average transaction prices for any first quarter in the companys history.

The Chevrolet Trax, Equinox and Colorado all set GM first-quarter sales records and the GMC Acadia posted its best quarter ever. The all-new Cadillac XT4 was the best-selling vehicle in its segment and the Buick Enclave was up 28 percent versus a year ago.

The all-new full-size pickups from Chevrolet and GMC are also off to a very strong start.

Our production launch was very smooth and crew cab sales are brisk, especially those with premium trims, said Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president, Sales Operations. We look forward to improving availability of our wide-range of cabs, trim series and powertrains.

First-quarter 2019 average transaction prices for GM's all-new, light-duty pickups were $8,040 higher compared to their outgoing models in the first quarter of 2018, with the GMC Sierra leading the segment, according to J.D. Power PIN estimates.
Combined sales of the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 crew cabs the first of the companys all-new full-size pickups to launch were up 20 percent year over year.
Crew-cab production mix is currently running above 70 percent to meet strong customer demand, up 10 percentage points on average from the previous-generation trucks.
More than 95 percent of the all-new GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab sales are high-end trims including SLT, AT4 and Denali.

Availability of all-new regular-cab and double-cab pickups was very limited during the quarter due to launch timing, but full production of all cab styles started in March and they currently are arriving in dealer showrooms.
As I've said, full output is just now starting to make it to the lots on this "failure of a truck"

The all-new Cadillac XT4 was the best-selling vehicle in its segment and the Buick Enclave was up 28 percent versus a year ago.
WOW! XT4 out of the gate swinging!

I don't get how the press release says Silverado/Sierra sales are up, yet the Q1 sales chart shows them down. Does that mean 1500 sales are up yet the 2500, etc. are all down?

Assuming it is just the 1500 (and I don't know what was going on in Q1 last year), that is good news. Especially with all of the negativity surrounding the trucks. Any way to know if the outgoing model sold in material amounts in Q1?

XT4 didn't take a large bite out of the XT5. If the XT4 didn't exist and the XT5 had the same sales volume we'd just assume the 11% decrease was due to aging product....

And incentives are down a little...

I believe they are referring to 1500 crew cabs if I'm reading it correctly.

Yeah, I'm lost. I see 15.7% down for the Silverado, 114,313 sales YTD. Ram Trucks is 120,026 YTD and up 15%.

Can someone translate GM PR spin talk to me?

XT4 is a bit of a surprise. I thought it would take more sales away from the XT5

Yeah looks like they're talking about 2019 Crew Cabs, not the overall which is down and includes 2018s etc.

They are saying that crew cab sales (only) are up 20% YOY, which shouldn't be surprising since most people rush out to buy the new body style just to have the new toy on the block. They also mentioned ATP is up, which clearly points to early adopters buying top-tier trims out the gate, which always happens with the new designs. Q1 sales overall are down, which tells me that only the early adopters (aka, the guaranteed sales) are buying. Q2 will be even more interesting/telling.

It's 100% PR spin. What they're saying is that the crew cab is up 20% over last years numbers but overall, it's a sad figure that's down A LOT. Yet, the Sierra is maintaining pace with Q1 2018. It's odd how that works right? Yea, they're full of crap.

    Exactly what I was thinking!

    Silverado
    114,313
    135,545
    -15.7
    Sierra
    40,546
    41,468
    -2.2
It's a New Math! even without Ram's Help.

Crew Cab builds are up, but Reg Cab Builds are Gone.

Why would it be it's class leading and a great product. Only on GMI is it a failure.

The Colorado is gaining traction. I do think the Ranger is going to quickly overtake it for the number 2 place in midsize trucks in about a year. It might challenge the Tacoma in a couple of years for the number 1 spot in.

I thought the XT4 would become one of the top 2 best selling Cadillacs. I just didn't think it would happen this soon.

The optimist in me thinks the Silverado just needs a little more time to start taking off.

And it doesnt seem to be cannibalizing too many XT5 sales. I think that Cadillac/JDN did a great job in finding out what buyers in this segment are looking for.

I saw one the other day. XT4 should do well. To me at least, more interesting looking than XT5. Also, whatever happened to bumpers on this class? Seems like even light bumps are going to tear into the gate causing big bucks damage. I started looking around and noticed no small CUV's seem to have a bumper really.
