    Where do I sign?

My dealer reports the all new 9-5 should be on his floor in two to three weeks.

My lease ends in January - I would very much like to put a new 9-5 in my driveway. I'm down to a Regal CXL turbo w/manual or a Saab 9-5 with manual. I look forward to driving each of them.

Judging by the response to this thread, Saab has some work to do...

Looks great in black, from this angle and with those king size wheels, doesn't it? However, compared to BMW and Audi in particular the 9-5 choice of engines, I think, is worryingly substandard. In Europe: 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 turbo's and the V6 2.8. Plus two diesels from Fiat. In an ideal 'automobile society' a specialist brand like Saab should have the 2.0 TFSi engines from Audi, the 2.5 and 3.0 V6 from BMW and a V8 from Holden. Plus diesels from BMW too.

Why would they do that? In the US, any vehicle that goes on sale on or after January 1st 2010 can be called a 2011. I doubt they have something in store for an upgrade shortly after the intro to be worthy of a new model year designation.

With Saab, every car has certain MY designation. It usually changes at the autumn.

Reason for short MY10 run is very critical situation where Saab was and someways still is. They have to push 9-5 into market NOW, but they cant offer all options, colours, engines and such right away.

Of course car that Saab USA calls MY11 might actually be called MY10 elsewhere, if it make more sense for the USA market.

First off, there is no 1.8 turbo - or did I miss something?

Secondly, it's a Saab. It doesn't have to be everything Audi, BMW or Mercedes is, because it's different. A Saab is about being understated, being turbo, being FWD (and as such offering more room and less weight than RWD models), providing lots of mid-range punch without bragging about top power.

Saab is a thoroughly European brand, even compared to the German Trinity, who underwent a certain degree of Americanization. And it would work well for them, as the new CAFE is looming and it seems that the downsizing trend in terms of fuel consumption is inevitably making progress even in the USofA.

Which is why I am very happy with Saab having a strong offering in the 200 HP+ segment, which is the bread and butter of the executive class and the vast majority of the market, as well as strong low-emission diesels. A V8 in a Saab? Would be very hard to transfer the power to the wheels using FWD...

What I believe is the next step for Saab is the agressive trimming of the GM-derive platforms of excess weight. The 9-5 is a whale in terms of weight-to-size ratio an they need to work on that. That would give the car extra punch while at the same time reucing fuel consumption!

I don't think A V-8 is necessary. This is Saab after all, so a V-6 twin-turbo would be a nice option or something (EcoBoost type engine). Before the 9-5 was revealed there was supposedly a turbo V-6 with the "upwards of 350 hp" in the works. Never happened, unfortunately, but I think it would be a nice option.

The base 2.0T should be a nice engine, but I think the Turbo6 model is priced a little high, but that's debatable at best. My main concern is the Turbo6's engine itself. The Alloytech turbo is pretty widely critisized for its lag, fuel consumption, and those should be primary concerns for Saab. The engine is a little too last decade in that regard. I hope they address that. Otherwise I love it.

The weight issue you mentioned is absolutely spot on.

Coming 2012, courtesy of General Motors, with the first 9-5 refresh. It will be a TT version of the current 3.0 DI unit as seen slugging in the LaCrosse and SRX.

This will address your concerns. The 2.8 V6 is on its last legs, it overstayed its welcome only because GM halted all development for some time when they've tried to dodge bankruptcy, and thus the 3.0 TT only comes now.

As concerns "upwards of 350 HP", the Aero-X had a 2.8 V6 twinturbocharged and tuned to 400 HP, but there is a question of the durability, power transmission and fuel efficiency of such an engine. Saab built a one-off seven-speed transmission for the Aero-X, for the moment GM doesn't have a transmission capable of transferring so much power to the front wheels.
