First Drive: Encore GX brings serenity to the subcompact market

2020 Buick Encore GX First Drive | Bringing serenity to the subcompact market
Refined and spacious, but that's about all that's going for it

With Buick seeing sales success in our crossover-crazed world, it’s no wonder the company is adding to its crossover lineup with the 2020 Buick Encore GX. It sits just above the existing Encore, and it offers more space and new turbocharged engines for just a bit more money. In fact, as it starts at just $900 more than the existing Encore and offers more power, space and fuel economy, it’s unquestionably the Encore version to get when heading to your Buick dealer. But compared with other crossovers, the Buick’s only real advantage is in its quietness, refined powertrain and upmarket badge. Otherwise it's a fine but unexceptional crossover.

Powering the Encore GX is your choice of small turbocharged three-cylinder engines. The standard engine, available with every trim, is a 1.2-liter unit making 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. It’s only able to be paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive. It’s also not the most efficient powertrain offering, returning 28 mpg in town, 31 on the highway, and 29 combined. The optional engine, available only on the upper two trims Select and Essence, is a 1.3-liter example making 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. This engine can be paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive, or a nine-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel-drive. Also, because of efficiency boosters such as an offset crankshaft, electric oil pump, electric brake booster and electric turbo wastegate, it’s the most efficient choice. With the CVT and front-wheel drive, the Encore GX manages 30 mpg in the city, 32 on the highway, and 31 combined. The all-wheel-drive version only gets 26 mpg in town, 29 on the highway and 28 combined.

After reading through it I think it's a good review. It hits them where they need hit and on a lot of the same things we gripe about here as well as other places. Short seat bottoms, less than stellar 9 speed tranny, and low quality interior bits among them.

It sounds like those last points is where GM falls short.. why do they not do better seats, just give it enough power and get those engineers to fine tune the transmission...

This thing needs at least 200 HP and pounds ft or torques ,plus decent seats

Seems like a decent ride for what it is. Many people value comfort over performance.

As far as the seats are concerned, I'm not to worried about that, depends on the shape of your butt. What is comfortable for one person will be uncomfortable for another.

I thing GM has "soggy" transmissions on purpose, must be something to do with emissions/mpgs. I almost always put my ATS in sport mode for that very reason. In sport mode the shifts are crisp and immediate. The other day I forgot to put it in sport mode, I floored it and the transmission was a soggy mess, reminding me why I always drive in sport mode. GM makes their regular transmissions suck on purpose. I don't understand how making the transmission balky helps them, but I'm convinced it's on purpose.

I have noticed that in GM vehicles where the seat bottom does all the movement in the multi adjustment or what used to be the six way power seat vs others or the old way where the whole seat moves, that the lower cushion seems short like it was made for those with short legs and normal legs don't get the support farther out.

Sounds like your typical GM vehicle. Do just as much to not make it bad, but don't make the effort to make it best in class.
The difference in effort between Mazda and GM is astounding, IMO
However, I do think the interior is attractive and actually prefer it to the missing controls in the Mazda

I like the Encore GX, but I wish it had a better engine upgrade.

I can't have serenity with a thrashy engine, short wheelbase, and being seen in it, even as a passenger.

"Sport" utilities without the sport have been a winning formula for Buick. So it continues.
If "Sport" were as much of a thing as the auto rags made it out to be, Mazda would be kings of the world. Obviously, they are not.

See a ton of Encores vs. any other Buick.

Should sell lots more with this better design.

With the smaller Encore leaving us at some point in the near future I guess the Encore GX is exactly that.

Even KIA doesn't stoop down low enough to bring a 3 cyl. to the US. This is just cost cutting on GM's part

My wife has a 2020 Encore GX Essence FWD with the 1.3T and CVT. Any and all of you who criticize the power or smoothness of this engine clearly have not driven one. And, the gas mileage is excellent to boot.
