Buick Unveils 2020 Encore and Encore GX in Shanghai

We could see the larger GX replace our current Encore in the U.S.

As expected, Buick pulled the covers off its refreshed Encore and brand-new Encore GX at the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show. It's not surprising that Buick would unveil these crossovers in China considering that's the automaker's largest market, but we expect at least one of these crossovers to come to the States to replace our current Encore, which has been Buick's best-selling model for the last three years.

Buick hasn't yet release a whole lot of information about its new Encore twins besides coyly describing the GX as a longer-wheelbase version of the Encore. In reality, we think there's quite a bit of difference between these two Encores. The regular Encore is similarly sized to the current version, which is heavily based on the Opel Mokka, and it's probably based on an updated version of GM's Gamma II platform called GEM, which stands for Global Emerging Markets.

The larger Encore GX is likely sitting atop GM's newer VSS-F platform. We don't know exactly how much bigger the GX is than the regular Encore, but we wouldn't be surprised if it's this larger version that will be sold Stateside. An unknown range of four-cylinder Ecotec engines will be offered in China, paired to either a nine-speed automatic or optional continuously variable transmission.

Regardless of what's underneath, these two Encore models share the same sense of style, and it's a look we can get behind. A wide winged grille is bisected by a chrome strip that carries the Buick Tri-Shield emblem front and center. The rest of the sheetmetal is taut and crisp, with concave bodysides and muscular flanks. We'll have to wait and see what tweaks are made to the American Encore, what powertrain it will feature, and when exactly it will go on sale. In the meantime, feel free to check out the gallery up above.

Not a bad effort. I don't really care for the front end of the regular 2020 Encore (blue one), but the orange Encore GX that rides on VSS-F looks fantastic:

If this is indeed the version we're getting, prepare to see a ton of 'em. Buick has a hit on their hands.

I like the orange colored one. That front end just looks better because the shallower grille opening really does make a difference.

I sorta like that two tone look the orange one has with a black roof. I'm starting to see it more lately. I just hope it won't look "dated" soon.

The article says the blue one is the Encore GX and the orange one is the regular Encore.

The blue one is the GX. GM said so. https://media.gm.com/media/cn/en/bui...415_Buick.html

If we look at the hierarchy, the GX would most likely be the next gen Envision. It would be stupid to have an Encore that grew slightly, add the GX & then keep/grow the Envision.

A far far far cry better than that first gen styling mess Opel had a hand in. As soo as I saw it I said to myself with some relief "I don't have to hate this,I can like it.".

    Nice job.

Looks elegant yet muscular - I like it. I've driven the current Encore and it is a nice ride, but I couldn't get past its dorky looks....

Considering the obsession with crossovers right now, if possible GM should sell both of them here.

The orange one looks like it's on the new platform AND larger (and better looking). The blue one has the same upturned beltline the current Encore has.

Come to think of it, they both look larger than the current one.

Attractive but looks like visibility will be poor.
They had better be building it here though

I agree - Buick sales would be up 30% if they did that.

Both are quite nice looking IMO.

If it's likable, then that pretty much confirms that we're not going be getting this version.

Re: Buick Unveils 2020 Encore and Encore GX in Shanghai

I'm not crazy about the sloping roof line. I hope the Trax (Trailblazer) looks more like the Blazer.
Should be interesting to see a Granite and or XT3 come out of this down the road.

So someone explain to me why this couldn't be built at Lordstown or Oshawa? I would think they could easily produce over 100K of these a year, more if other divisions get versions. Why should we build these in Korea where GM is down to a few hundred car sales a month? Why are we supporting Korean workers?

GM please with great haste bring both options to the US. Lord knows Buick could use the volume!
I want a car so violent that the mere thought of full throttle would cause a heart attack. That actually going wide open throttle in would result in nothing less than instant death!
