It all depends on your preferred trim.

Earlier this year, Buick expanded its lineup by squeezing in a new model between the Encore and Envision – the Encore GX. It is longer than the standard Encore by three inches, and, depending on the trim, cheaper than a regular Encore. Cars Direct is reporting the 2020 Encore GX will start at $25,095, including destination. That’s just $900 more than the Encore that starts at $24,195, and a clear advantage for the GX when you begin comparing higher trims.

However, once you start comparing trims, the Encore GX is cheaper. Comparing Preferred trims gives the GX a $500 advantage over the Encore – $25,085 and $25,595, respectively. Choose the Essence trim, with front-wheel-drive, and the GX is $29,495, $800 cheaper than the Encore Essence.

The GX also offers other advantages than saving a few dollars. The GX is three inches longer than the regular Encore. While that may not seem like much, the GX has 4.7 more cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row.

Buick dealers still have a ton of 2019's on the lot. I'm sure the old Encore will have a fire sale and probably be dropped. GM's offering 20% off list on anything sitting around.

You almost can't compare the costs of cars these days because almost every car you see on the dealership lot is loaded with packages and dealer add-ons like deluxe mud flaps. What is bundled at each trim level could also be different.

From what I've read, they are going to be selling both. For how long only Buick knows I guess.

I'd guess the current Encore will be fleet dumped and the Encore GX will be heavily fleet restricted. Kind of like how the Captiva/Equinox was.

Twenty percent should be the starting point for many GMs. I paid 16 for my 24 grand 2004 Impala.

New Encore is so much more attractive IMO.

Even on a fire sale... would probably pass if I was buying.

I'm honestly shocked the Buick doesn't fair better than the Trax. The Buick comes with more standard options, looks better (to my eyes, anyway), and is usually running better promo deals than the Trax. I guess buyers just assume that because it is a Buick it will cost more and don't even bother looking.

My sister bought an Encore after her 2012 Cruze got up there in mileage. Nicer vehicle than I initially gave it credit for. Her setup is fairly base except for AWD and another option I can't remember... Having driven it a couple times, it really isn't something I'd want for myself, but I can now see the appeal of them. Apparently there is a Trifecta tune available for them as well, which could create a pretty fun commuter vehicle in bigger cities.

With only 3 cylinders, it ought to be cheaper! Is it lighter?

I don't think US is getting the 3 cyl. That's a China spec.

The order guide shows "standard turbo" and "premium turbo" engine offerings for U.S. spec Encore GX.

    LIH is the order code for "standard turbo"; it's a 1.2L 3-cylinder rated at GM-estimated 137 hp [102 kW] @ 5,000 rpm, 162 lb-ft of torque [219 Nm] @ 2,500 rpm. L3T is the order code for "premium turbo", which is a 1.3L 3-cylinder with GM-estimated 155 hp [115 kW] @ 5,600 rpm / 174 lb-ft torque [236 Nm] @ 1,500 rpm.

This is when you wish one was a fly in the meeting that thought it was a good idea to keep two similar sized and priced vehicles on the same lot, one being a lot newer more refined. Unless GM is keeping the Encore around to feed Enterprise and Hertz, I do not see the justification for keeping the Encore around.
