Aussie designer Mike Simcoe to head General Motors design globally

Mr Monaro, Mike Simcoe, has been appointed the head of General Motors design globally.

Only the seventh person to hold the position in the company’s 108-year history, Simcoe is also the first non-American. The Aussie replaces Ed Welburn, who today announced his retirement.

Simcoe is a 33-year veteran of GM Design and currently holds the position of Vice President of GM International Design. He will start transitioning into his new role from May 1.

Simcoe will relocate to Detroit and his successor at GM International — which takes in production and advanced studios in Korea, Australia and India — will be announced in due course. Current Holden Design boss Richard Ferlazzo is widely tipped for the role.

Congrats to Mike Simcoe. He should do a great job.
I hope his influence will bring out a Trailblazer in the USA soon!

Now or never, GM. Give Holden good RHD cars, or give Holden to someone who will.

Is "Design" only responsible for styling, aesthetics, look, feel... or is it also responsible for behind the scenes design, how things fit together, assembly, mating surfaces, fastener choices, etc.

If just the former... I think he will do a nice job.

If it's also the latter... I'm not too thrilled. Considering the price point, both of my Monaros/GTOs were lousy when it comes to how things were designed to come together. From the driver's seat to interior door panels to shifter to suspension bits, it's like Holden didn't care how the car would hold up down the road, as long as it looked good day #1.

Vehicle program engineer is responsible for how things fit together and systems integration.

Design establishes the look, colors, textures, etc. Engineering then defines the sub-assemblies, parts and interfaces between them. Purchasing then sources those assemblies and parts with suppliers defining much of the engineering within their assembly controlled by the interfaces. Production then assembles these sub-assemblies into a complete vehicle. Good things and bad things can occur at any of the stages involved.

Wow. Not my experience with my 80k-mile G8. At all. Haven't even had any interior button markings wear off, like on other GM products IME. Maybe they got that much better from one gen to the next.

As these next couple of years unfold, it will be interesting to see where Mr. Simcoe takes GM. Amazing that he's only the seventh to hold this position in the 108-year history.

This can only be good news. Maybe some Aussie influence (cars and trucks with balls).

Chief designer at GM is a very high pressure position, especially where royalists are involved. Can you imagine pissing off Corvette or Camaro Royalists by bringing a Camry to market as a Corvette? Porsche Designers do not have to deal with problems like these. They have a Xerox machine in their office.

Design is usually 3 years or more in advance right? I wouldnt think we would see his design style until next generation of cars come along.

    How long till thats due?

Re: Simcoe gets top GM design job

Not long ago there was little spat between JDN and Mark Ruess about the design direction of Cadillac (late 2015, early 2016, iirc). Apparently JDN wants more curves, and said he would delay vehicles in order to get it, MR pulled rank and said Cadillac was sticking with its American take on design. I don't remember if Welburn was involved in this spat. But MR was basically saying that only he could delay product, etc, and that Cadillac was sticking with unique American design.

Never heard anything more about it. But it does pique my interest, even if only coincidental, that there is now a change in design leadership at GM.

I am on the border of genius and crazy. I keep trying to cross over into genius, but ICE keeps sending me back to the crazy side of the border.

There are only about 200 car designer job positions available on the planet.

It is easier to become an NBA superstar than become a car designer...

Ironically it is one of the poorest paid jobs, you are not getting rich designing cars.
