Is the Opel GT Concept Just Sound and Fury? Maybe, Maybe Not...

Opel’s new RWD concept has lit up the social networks today, but what’s it worth in the long run?

I'm wondering if you couple the GT concept with Caddys sub-ATS RWD plans, the code 130R and maybe even SAIC for good measure (could be great for low cost production if shoppers show they don't care if their cars are made in China like everything else)

I had been anxious to see the new concept. Now that I have, I'm sorry to say I'm a bit disappointed. I never imagined Opel would make a 1970s Retro GT Shape, which IMHO was just a micro sized C3 Corvette styled knock off. Opel can do better.

Completely love the proportions. But this thing isn't salable in the real world. the cabin is minuscule, and there's going to be precisely zero trunk space. No utility whatsoever - only Lamborghini and Ferrari get away with that. (Seriously - Porsche 911 and Corvette are surprisingly practical cars.)

It's a piece of something all right...

Opel typically makes very attractive concepts, but this isn't one of them.

Nice piece, Michael. The tie in between the popular, but defunked, Code 130R, sub-ATS, SAIC and now GT concept is an interesting one. We've covered much of this ground before, though.

I would love for this to be true. I love lightweight, great handling cars. But, where does the volume from to justify this small, RWD platform? ATS doesn't indicate there would be great volume for an even smaller Cadillac sedan or coupe. The Opel concept would likely struggle to reach five-figure volume globally. Mazda essentially owns this market with the Miata and even it needs a partner to make the platform costs acceptable. Is there a market for a small, RWD Buick? If the Avista can't be justified on an existing platform, I've got to think 'no'.

I'd love to be proven wrong, though. Turbo three? 2200 lbs? Sign me up!

I really like the Opel GT, unlike Monza 2013.

All that hype and I am totally unimpressed with the reveal of the GT. It just looks like some designer's fantasy ego project. It's not sensational. It doesn't look practical nor producible. It's not even all that attractive. Sure I see Corvette-like fenders and Opel's characteristic new grille design but the rest is a forgettable blob. I was blown away by the Buick Avista, not this.

I was expecting to see a car with a possible Holden, Buick, Vauxhall tie in. I especially wanted to get an idea of where Holden was headed.

Re: Is the Opel GT Concept Just Sound and Fury? Maybe, Maybe Not...

It's so funny to read the comments of people knocking this design. If they'd done something that didn't (by your opinion) look like a retro inspired Opel GT, you'd rake them over the coals for that! That being said, I think this looks pretty cool and could care less if it has Buick/Holden possibility, because the Avista has proven that Buick has absolutely no plans to ever give us anything by way of a RWD coupe..EVER. No matter how cool or beautiful and appealing to US buyers it is.

It is also branded/designed as a Vauxhall, like all other Opels. Why would it also be Holden and Buick for a European auto show?

I'm not into the weird side window thing, but the more I look at the GT the cooler I think it is.

I'd like to see it without the stripe and silver window.
