The Mid-Engine Corvette Starts Production in January '19

    https://www.gminsidenews.com/articles...on-in-january/

There will be three available powertrains, two gasoline and one hybrid codenamed LT2, LT6 and LT7.

The prototype spotted here could potentially be driving its front wheels with electric motors, based on the palcement of what we presume to be a heat extractor on the car's nose...

Seems odd that there would be a heat extractor on the hood/frunk as well as the higher center of gravity

Would this be the end of front engined 'vette or will there be two configurations?

C7 is expected to run through to 2021. Unclear if there are plans to redesign the front engine model past 2021, but it could be dependent on Corvette becoming a standalone brand...

but the idea was always dismissed as too expensive and boutique both for the company from an economics standpoint, and for the Corvette’s traditional clientele in terms of what they want.
exactly, why it should have never been called "Corvette".

To build a Halo Car, name shared with a limited ceiling.

I'm thinking there will be two Corvettes - front engine and mid-engine. Unless they are going to price the mid-engine Vette the same as the current front engine model, I think they will have the two distinct cars. I assume the mid-engine Vette will be expensive, thus shutting out a lot of the traditional Corvette buyers. I don't see GM giving up that volume and that demographic, don't they sell around 30k a year? Which is amazing volume for a car that starts somewhere around $50k.

As long as they don't compromise the front engine Corvette to allow the mid-engine one to look better in regards to perfomance, I'm happy with a two model approach. Be really cool if they have a start price of $100k and it spanks the European exotics selling for 3x the amount.

Hopefully this could also be the beginning of the sub-Corvette division, and a Miata-type of entry model will eventually be introduced. Manta-Ray?

*I really still like the 1992 Stingray III Concept.

I'm mostly interested in engines..my guess
    LT2-basic version-6.2 l v8 cam in block, 470+hp
    LT6-supercharged LT2 650+ hp
    LT7-LT6+electric-800 hp

    ..or something like that

I'm a lifelong Texan, but have a lot of family roots in Missouri (which we all remember from elementary school geography as The Show Me State).

There have been mid-engine 'Vette engineering exercises since before I was born... and at this point, I've bought enough car magazines with mid-engine 'Vette cover stories to require me to issue a formal apology to the Sierra Club for all the paper that was used to print them.

Until I see one for sale on the floor at my local Chevy stealership, the mid/rear-engine 'Vette is bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, the Area 51 alien, and the man on the grassy knoll all rolled in to one.
There seem to be 3 standard union responses to any criticism of the UAW:

    1) You're just jealous
    2) If the unions go away, the middle class will disappear
    3) If the unions go away, everyone will become a company slave

    None of them are true.

Re: The Mid-Engine Corvette Starts Production in January

Corvette will never be a stand alone brand, so I wish that just goes away. No need to add brands to the portfolio. I think they will have 2 models a Mid Engine version to share with Caddy, and the regular Front engine version, but a entire stand alone brand not going to happen, Chevy is GMs bread and butter, and I don't think they are going for that. As soon as Dodge did that with the VIPER it fell off the face of the earth, worst decision ever taking Ram Trucks, and the Viper away from Dodge.

That test mules Front bumper overhang is huge, looks like a W-Body sedan.

Thanks for the early morning chuckle.. Yeah, I hear ya.. It's been an ongoing subject of speculation since Christ was a corporal.

Besides.. for production to be ramping up in January with so little fanfare up until now seems a bit improbable to me.

No one knew anything about the Ford GT until its reveal. Ford just took two years to start production.

GM on the other hand can reveal it at NAIAS and start taking orders right away when interest is at its highest. I also assume the Corvette will be much cheaper and less exclusive than the GT.
