GMI @ LAIAS 2014: Why the 2016 ELR was a No-Show and other Cadillac News

Cadillac has big plans for its electrified coupe.

In the weeks leading up to the Los Angeles International Auto Show, it was widely reported that Cadillac would use that venue to debut a significantly upgraded ELR. However, a week before the show, the car was removed from the LAIAS website's world debut page, and no reason given...That is, until now!

In discussing with Cadillac insiders what they refer to as ELR 2.0, GMI has learned that the debut was delayed due to system integration difficulties. According to GMI's sources, the ELR 2.0 will be a "highly autonomous vehicle" and that a few of the features planned for the car are taking longer to refine than was originally planned. Indeed, some may be delayed indefinitely. As a result, Cadillac decided to delay the debut until the production feature-set is finalized, so as of now, there's no target date for when this car will debut.

Earlier in the year, GM stated that a future Cadillac would debut the so-called Super-Cruise feature, and it's not unreasonable to assume that ELR will be vehicle. What's also interesting, is that our sources, when discussing autonomy, used the plural term "features", which leads us to believe that it might be more than just Super Cruise that is coming.

No information was given regarding the nature of the range-extending engine, nor was anything new shared about ELR 2.0's potential electric range.

Keep in mind that our source was very light on specifics, so it's open to speculation as to what all of this may mean. What is certain, is that Cadillac has a lot more in-store for the next ELR than anyone outside GM had imagined.

Lambda-based Cadillac crossover still on the table.

Further discussions with Cadillac staff in attendance at LAIAS revealed that a future crossover based on a revised version of the Lambda platform is still very much a possibility. Our source stressed that plans could still change in regards to the platform that will underpin such a vehicle, but that a CUV slotted beneath Escalade is certain to join the lineup in the not-so-distant future.

CT6 will be the flagship...At least for now.

Our sources also told us that, while Cadillac will eventually add a model above the CT6, the time-frame for the introduction of this vehicle has not been determined. Since it was only last month when Johan de Nysschen indicated that he had green-lit the super-premium model, it's safe to assume that we won't see this car for another four or five years.

ELR needs better performance, it's all show and no go.

I'll be mad as hell if the Big Caddy SUV is built on lambda!

    No surprises there.

    Thanks for the info!

Interesting approach if they make the ELR a tech laden powerhouse of true leading technology. That may allow it to find a niche (meaning a niche where people want to buy it) that the ELR desperately needs.

Big "no" from me in regards to using the lambada chassis for Caddy.

It very well may not be Lambda. Source said enhanced or in other words significantly different than the previous platform. I would suspect a weight drop of at least 500 lbs and the possibility of 4WD(Ford Explorer) as well as AWD, 8-10 spd tranny, new range of Cadillac only engines. I say do it, and do it good!

Interesting...hope the CT6 is worthy of being a flagship. Been quiet the past couple weeks, so I hope there's some news soon.

Re: GMI @ LAIAS 2014: Why the 2016 ELR was a No-Show and other Cadillac News

The current ELR is indeed a problem and is currently languishing on showroom floors. My dealership is now selling them for $60K, down a staggering $20K from the original base price. And that still may not be enough.

Personal luxury vehicles are always going to be low volume cars, but this one was even more so. The Voltec technology is certainly interesting, but without a serious performance component, all of those buyers in the price range are going to Tesla (or the BMW i8 is money is no object). At $60K, they are finally below the base price of a Tesla Model S 60, but it still may not be enough to attract buyers. Cadillac has been way behind in luxury green vehicles for a while now, and this car wasn't the answer. The only other one, the previous generation Escalade Hybrid didn't sell well either and wasn't repeated in the current generation.

I'm curious if the new ELR will look any/much different? I've yet to see an ELR here in central Florida.

    XT6 - 5-seat midsize SUV (Cayenne's/X5's-fighter). Perhaps, Alpha 2 Gen LWB-based.
    XT7 - 7-seat fullsize SUV (perhaps, СT6-based).
    XT8 - ultra luxury fullsize SUV (CT8-based).

I'm so sick of this Lamba stuff. You can't fight the upcoming X7, the GLA, and a potential Q8 with transverse engines. They just don't make enough torque.

Super cruise... pffft. Chop the top off of it so the name actually makes sense.
That'll put an end to the comparisons to tangential competitors. And maybe they'll be able to get some real money for 'em.

    410 hp & 369 lb-ft is enough.
Then you beat 'em down with interior opulence and most of all... size.

Re: GMI @ LAIAS 2014: Why the 2016 ELR was a No-Show and other Cadillac News

I'm guessing the ELR wasn't discussed to not steal the thunder from the new Volt to be introduced introduced in January. I'm guessing the ELR will look the same but will use the new 5ET50 five mode transmission that will also be in the Volt. This tranny will produce more power as the output of the two electric motors can be combined. It will also produce better gas mileage because it changes from a mostly serial hybrid to a mostly parallel hybrid. Thus eliminated the losses incurred during ICE/generator/traction motor power flow. The direct drive will be supplemented by the two motors, meaning a lot more power than the current configuration. I'm also guessing the ELR will get a larger ICE than the Volt, perhaps the twin turbo 3.6 liter. Switching ICEs is possible now as the new tranny supports a direct drive connection between the ICE and the wheels.

Meh, I don't think most folks know enough for it to make a difference. What WILL matter is that it doesn't look like "Lambda v5.0". Badgineering a Q7/8 competitor from Lambda = pure fail. Escalade can get away with it for now but the crossovers should at least look entirely unique.

    Man,

    Lexus gets it
    Autoblog
When Lexus unveiled the LF-C2 concept at the LA Auto Show last week, it did two things: it previewed the direction in which the Japanese luxury automaker's design department was looking for the immediate future, and it previewed a cabrio version of the RC coupe (to replace the IS Convertible) on the other. But the latter, according to new reports, was ruled out before the concept ever took the stage.

Although the prospect of a convertible version was engineered right into the RC coupe's chassis, Motor Trend reports that plans to put such a vehicle into production were met with hostility by Lexus dealers, who were offered a two-door convertible instead of the three-row crossover they've been lobbying for.

As a result – and with a finite amount of development bucks on hand – Lexus is reportedly listening to its dealers, axing the RC Convertible program and proceeding instead with a seven-seat crossover. Plans to stretch the RX were reportedly ruled out, so Toyota is reportedly proceeding instead with a new model to be based on the LS sedan. The new model would take aim at the likes of the Mercedes GL, Audi Q7 and Infiniti QX60 when it arrives in three years as a 2018 model.

It's not the first time we've seen Toyota listen to dealers asking for a high-end people-mover: Earlier this year, dealers in Japan asked the automaker for a luxed-out minivan, prompting it to build the Esquire van just for the Japanese Domestic Market.

The biggest German crossovers are puny compared to the Lambdas.
The combination of the TT motor, AWD and Lambda size will win the day.

Cadillac should've gotten this years ago.
GM's planners have been beyond stupid when it comes to Cadillac and crossovers... and Cadillac's sales reflect this fail.
