Looks like a lightly reskinned 2015 Opel Astra-K hatch - which is the way it should be for a major global manufacturer.

No real mention of how it rides and handles, or Auto Start/Stop.
The Watts Link should have been standard on all models, but not offering it as a performance upgrade is really annoying.

It's barely different than the sedan.

I mentioned the only real tangible difference, the hatch plus shorter rear overhang give it a more planted feel during cornering. Big wheels make it loud inside. That's it, literally...

Stop/Start, what do you want to know? It shuts off when you stop, turns back on when you release the brake. You can game it with a little two feet footwork if you have a problem with it.

Pretty good report. I wish though along with the diesel, they would give us a true performance model instead if just upgrades from the parts dept. You guys didn't get the bears nauseous in all your frolicking around did ya?

I have to be honest, I really REALLY like the looks of it. I just wish there was a sportier variant. I suspect the aftermarket will tune up the diesel when it launches.

according to Chevrolet 30 percent of the 350,000+ annual hatchback sales in the U.S (excluding performance variants) transact at average price of over $25,000.
I'd think you'd need performance variants to drive up the average price over $25k, but then again they are probably throwing in the A3, etc....

Nice review! Great looking car! And I'm with everyone else, needs a performance variant, were I 25 I'd want one with a performance package from the factory, I've never been into after market.

Really wish there was at least an option for the 1.5LT for a true RS package. Having said that, the Mazda 3, Civic hatch and the Cruze are class of the field. The Focus needs a revamp.

There is no A3 hatch anymore besides the e-tron nobody buys. That's some interesting data, especially cherrypicking only 30% of all hatches.

Shows what I know about the A3, I thought it only came in a hatch.

Re: GMI Drives the 2017 Cruze Hatch

I was immediately intrigued by the 'claimed' rear cargo room of the Cruze Hatch, with its claimed 23 cu. ft behind the rear seats and my Volt's measly 10.6 I though to myself WOW, over twice as big! Sounds great (on paper) in the real world, I'm not sure it is bigger at, maybe smaller! I think you do gain a bit of faux room, as the hatch angle a glass offer a bit more height, but in most situations, a lot of that isn't usable.

Next time I go, I'm taking a tape measure.......................

    Color me disappointing.

The back seat did seem to be bigger, but unless they are going to ride with a suitcase on their lap, it just gives them a bit more legroom.

Also wasn't a fan of the looks of the rear from side angles, it literally looks like it was chopped-off, the rear-seat head-rests are behind those famous little plastic black-outs.

Re: GMI Drives the 2017 Cruze Hatch

This doesn't explain why the Cruze Hatch is rated almost 2 1/2 times my Volt, but it may explain the "gain" vs. sedan, despite being so much shorter.

Link not working, here is the Google search, should be the 1st one: https://www.google.com/search?q=Trun...sus+Open+Space

    Trunk Versus Open Space
The type of cargo area matters, too. SAE stipulates a different method to measure space in an enclosed trunk in a sedan or coupe. Automakers have to fit SAE-specified blocks that simulate luggage parcels into the trunk and add them up. But the open spaces in SUVs, minivans, wagons and hatchbacks don't lend themselves easily to these blocks, and that's why the SAE and regulators invented the length/width/height calculations, GM's Mitchell explained.
That means you can't compare a sedan's trunk with a hatchback's cargo area and declare one larger than the other using only SAE cargo specs.

Take the Ford Focus as an example. It comes in sedan and hatchback form. The hatchback's cargo area behind the second row is rated at 23.8 cubic feet while the sedan's trunk is rated at 13.2 cubic feet. Looking at the images it's hard to see where the 10.6 added cubic feet would come into play in the grocery store parking lot. Stacking items above the top of the rear seat could be dangerous to passengers.

"In general, the enclosed-trunk method yields a result about 10 to 15 percent lower than the precise volume of the trunk because its purpose is to represent the usable cargo space for actual things owners will want to pack," Honda's engineers told us.

    The Bottom Line
At the end of the day, automakers don't have to follow SAE guidelines when they publish cargo volumes. "If you look at the code of federal regulations, they state which procedure you're supposed to use when you look at [interior] volume," GM's Mitchell said. "But then you can measure it any way you want and use it in your advertising."
"SAE is not a governing body," Ford's Mustaine noted. "There is no advertising standard that is required by law."
All six automakers that responded to our questions said they follow SAE guidelines. Numbers can lie, so bring some salt and make sure you stack up our real-world cargo photos alongside those numbers when doing your research.
