GM Trucks Have a MASSIVE, Unfixable Vibration

Steve Elmer from AutoGuide has been working on this story for months.

Turns out, much like the SUVs, full size GM trucks also shake heavily at highway speeds.

While SUV owners complain of buffeting causing headaches and dizziness, GM half-ton owners claim there is an insistent vibration in their trucks. “While driving at speeds above 45 mph, there is a vibration from the rear of the vehicle,” reads a complaint on the NHTSA database. “Dealer advised it was wheel balance and balanced the tires with no relief. Have since replaced all four tires with no relief.”
GM has told customers that vibration is "inherent to the design"

Could it be something with the frame or sheer mounts?

No big deal. It's only full sized pickups and SUVs. Not like that's an important market for GM.

Re: GM Trucks Have a MASSIVE, Unfixable Vibration

Could this be some sort of harmonic that has to do with the material used and sizing of various components?

More importantly, with all of the pre-release testing done on modern vehicles, how in the hell does something like this make it into production?

I've seen the way that Dodge has handled the death wobble and GM has been pretty much doing the same here. There has to be something to do with the shocks/springs in the rear that just harmonize after a bounce. It's odd how its so hit or miss though.

From my understanding, it's not all of the SUV/Trucks, but a big enough of a percentage to be worrisome.

It seems like this problem came up during the production on a run of the vehicles. I'm still thinking there may have been a part(s) change from and outside supplier.

    Slight material change/variation?

And it is hard to know how common this is, as the internet is not a great way to count vehicle issues. Still, this is disheartening.

On a personal level, this could impact a buying decision. We were all set to buy a 2016 Chevy SS, but a career change and job relocation have made us re-think that in favor of a truck. I've loved the look of the High Country since its debut, and we're considering one. We've also looked at the Colorado, due to the availability of the diesel, and it would also fit our needs. These vibration issues definitely have our attention, and might end up dictating the decision. We'll just have to wait and see.

    Maybe a 2nd source issue?

I'm surprised they haven't bought some of the bad ones back and completely deconstructed the trucks/CUVs to see how they compare from a known good one to a known bad one.

I think that it is more than a Slight change/variation.

Here is why. If it were a small change, GM would be all over fixing the issue, rather than letting it tarnish any reputation. Also with the knowledge of which vehicles are affected and which are not, GM knows exactly which parts are causing this. Which leads me to believe the cure is very big, or so many that the costs exceed the reputation tarnishing.

I hope that if GM gets enough bad units in they can diagnose what is causing this. If this gets more play in the mainstream press it might, as someone else said, put off a decision to purchase what is otherwise a fine truck or SUV.

Is this noticeable on the Escalades too?

Another "problem" I've never heard about from any actual owners.

They didn't notice how the air dams would severely limit their trucks and SUVs in even minor off road situations, they didn't notice the durability problems that the cylinder deactivation would cause for their small block V8s, and they didn't notice how abrupt and poorly timed the start/stop feature is for their Malibus.

I kind of doubt they actually conduct rigorous durability testing for their vehicles anymore. If they do, the scope of their testing is way, way to narrow.

It wasn't an issue on my T900. Has to be some kind of harmonic issue on the K2s that's different from the T900.
